Hey there, San Antonio! It’s no secret that more people are packing their bags and moving to our sweet city. With newcomers comes the inevitable rush of cars filling up our streets and highways. But, it seems like the expanding roads may be leading to something pretty concerning: an increase in road rage-related incidents. So, what’s really happening out there?
Let’s dive into the specifics. Just this past Sunday, we were shocked to hear about a tragic rollover crash on Loop 410. The series of events began at a bustling flea market on the city’s far South Side. Two groups of individuals got into a heated argument that spilled over onto the highway. It escalated with one driver, a 46-year-old man, ramming his car into another vehicle. Sadly, he did not survive the crash, but thankfully, the people in the other car walked away with their lives.
Now, here’s where things get a bit more eye-opening. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has reported that, in just the first month of 2024, there have already been three road rage crashes in our area! To give you a perspective, in all of 2023, Bexar County reported a total of 200 road rage incidents, and guess what? The prior year had the same number. So far, this year, TxDOT has recorded 194 crashes that can be traced back to road rage.
We reached out to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) to see how they were handling these road rage situations. Here’s the kicker: they don’t have a specific tracker for road rage incidents as of now! So, if an unfortunate event occurs, it could be classified in various ways, such as aggravated assault, deadly conduct, or even murder, depending on the severity of the situation. They did share with us, though, that they take road rage incidents seriously and encourage individuals to call 911 if they witness any aggressive behavior on the road.
In an eye-opening statistic revealed by a nonprofit known as ‘The Trace,’ San Antonio was tied with Memphis for the second highest increase in road rage shootings over the past decade! This data comes from the “Gun Violence Archive.” It’s definitely food for thought considering how something as simple as driving can lead to such dangerous encounters.
So where does that leave us? As San Antonio continues to grow, it’s paramount for us to be aware of our surroundings while driving. It’s concerning to think that a simple road trip could escalate into a life-threatening situation due to someone else’s rash actions. People are wondering if the SAPD should start tracking these incidents more carefully to provide our city with better safety measures. Do you agree? Share your thoughts!
As we navigate our beautiful city, let’s keep the highways safe and avoid letting tempers flare behind the wheel. Stay calm, and remember: it’s always better to take a deep breath rather than let road rage take control. While we continue to enjoy the growth happening in San Antonio, let’s make a collective effort to promote harmony on our roads.
