San Antonio recently experienced a surge of crime that had residents both shaken and alert. On Friday, two young men were arrested after a series of brazen robberies spread throughout various locations in the city, leaving many in the community concerned about safety.
The tumultuous day kicked off around noon when local law enforcement received a frantic call reporting a robbery at the popular Rolling Oaks Mall. According to the police, the suspects, Austin Mendoza, 20, and Marcelo Ojeda, 19, had been waiting for a jewelry store to open. After the store opened its doors, Mendoza seized the opportunity, snatching multiple items and attempting to escape with Ojeda at his side.
Things quickly escalated when a courageous customer tried to intervene. Unfortunately, during the confrontation, the victim was injured by an unknown object, prompting the suspects to leave the mall in haste.
But the chaos didn’t stop there. Just a few hours later, around 3 p.m., the duo made their way across the city to Ingram Park Mall, over 20 miles away. There, they were seen attempting to break into several vehicles parked in the mall’s lot. But after several failed attempts, they dashed back inside the mall, only to exit again shortly after.
As if plotting a movie heist, the two hopped back in their getaway car and started driving around the parking lot. Little did they know, a mall security officer was keeping a close watch on them. In a bold move, Mendoza reportedly pointed what looked like a handgun at the security officer, threatening him before they sped away.
Their escapades didn’t end there. Shortly after their dramatic escape from the mall, they drove to a convenience store just a stone’s throw from Ingram Park Mall, located on Wurzbach Road. Reports indicate that Mendoza entered the store and grabbed several items, which he was clearly planning to steal.
When an employee caught on to what was happening and confronted him, Ojeda stepped in, brandishing a weapon and threatening the employee. This shocking encounter lead the employee to call for help, but fate was not on their side. The suspect’s getaway vehicle broke down, leaving them with no choice but to run.
Just when it seemed like they might slip through the cracks of justice, officers responded quickly to the scene. A brief chase ensued, but Mendoza was apprehended without incident. Law enforcement recovered the weapon used during the robbery, which later turned out to be a replica firearm.
Authorities continued their search for Ojeda, but they didn’t have to look far. Thanks to the San Antonio Police Department’s eagle-eyed helicopter, they managed to locate him soon after, bringing an end to this chaotic robbery spree.
Both suspects were taken into custody and now face multiple charges. Mendoza is looking at serious allegations, including aggravated robbery, evading arrest, and possession of a controlled substance. Meanwhile, Ojeda also faces charges of aggravated robbery and evading arrest.
As the community comes to terms with these alarming events, many are left wondering: what can be done to enhance safety in their neighborhoods? For now, it’s a relief for residents that these suspects are off the streets, though the memory of the day’s events will certainly linger on in the minds of those directly affected.
