San Antonio is buzzing with excitement as the city prepares for an event that promises to blend fitness, fun, and a splash of local history. This Saturday, participants can lace up their walking shoes for a first-of-its-kind 5K “Caminata” hosted by the Bexar County Historical Commission. The event honors the 20th anniversary of the “Camino Real de los Tejas” being designated as a National Historic Trail, highlighting an important piece of Texan heritage.
The 5K walk kicks off at 9 a.m. sharp at the iconic Spanish Governor’s Palace. If you’re a history buff or just looking for a unique way to spend your Saturday morning, this is an event you won’t want to miss. Best of all? It’s completely free to participate!
As walkers make their way through the streets of downtown San Antonio, they’ll have the chance to visit a series of historic markers and sites that celebrate the rich tapestry of local stories often overlooked. Belinda Mora Gavallos, Chair of the Bexar County Historical Commission, explained that the purpose of the event is to allow participants to have a look at history from a different angle. “By stopping at each one of these historical markers, participants can see this is a really interesting place and that history is fun,” she said.
Dr. Erika Arredondo-Haskins, a member of the commission, emphasizes that the event aims to spotlight under-told stories of the region’s past. “We specifically walked the area and chose spots that may have been overlooked,” she shared. This thoughtful approach means that participants will not only get some exercise but also engage with their community’s history in a meaningful way.
One of the main goals of the event is to ignite an interest in local history among younger generations. Organizers hope that by making history interactive and fun, they can foster a deeper appreciation for the past. Their enthusiasm is infectious, and it’s clear that they want everyone, regardless of age, to feel a connection to the beautiful narratives that shape San Antonio.
To sweeten the deal, the first 250 participants to arrive will receive a limited-edition “El Camino Real Day 2024” medal. This shiny keepsake will surely be a prized possession for those who participate. It’s not every day you get the chance to combine a leisurely stroll with a historical exploration and walk away with a medal, right?
If you’re in the San Antonio area this weekend, gather your family and friends and take part in this celebratory walk. It’s a wonderful way to embrace both fitness and knowledge while appreciating the rich history that surrounds us. So, grab your walking shoes, bring your curious mind, and join your neighbors in a delightful experience that promises to be both educational and enjoyable. See you at the starting line!
