News Summary

San Antonio attorney Daniel Mehler has had all charges against him dismissed by a Bexar County grand jury, citing insufficient evidence for the domestic violence allegations. Facing serious felonies, Mehler has continued his legal career amidst controversies, questioning the integrity of the investigation and the motives behind the accusations against him. The dismissal raises eyebrows about the claims and the judicial handling of the case, especially considering the alleged history of the accuser.

San Antonio Attorney Daniel Mehler Sees Charges Dismissed: A Rollercoaster of Allegations

In a surprising turn of events this week, San Antonio attorney Daniel Micah Mehler had all charges against him dropped. This 39-year-old lawyer, who has made quite a name for himself as a pro-cannabis advocate, was facing serious felony charges stemming from allegations of domestic violence. However, a Bexar County grand jury recently decided to dismiss the charges, labeling them as having insufficient evidence.

The Allegations Unraveled

Mehler’s troubles started in July 2024 when he was arrested after a woman he was dating accused him of various acts of domestic violence, including explosive claims of dragging her by her hair. The charges on the table were no small matter: felony sexual assault, assault against a family member, and a violation of a protective order. But as of this week, those charges have been officially dismissed.

The Bexar County court records revealed that both the sexual assault and family assault charges didn’t go any further due to a complete lack of evidence. With a judicial system that puts the burden of proof in the hands of the accuser, it’s no surprise that the grand jury found the case lacking. Even the violation of the protective order charge met a similar fate, with court documents confirming that it was dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Poor Investigations or Targeted Prosecution?

Mehler’s legal representation, attorney Bobby Barrera, has made strong assertions about the case. He argued that law enforcement didn’t properly investigate the accusations. Instead, they seemingly relied on the woman’s word without digging deeper into her credibility. Barrera suggested that the Alamo Heights police may have had a bias against Mehler because of his visibility as a cannabis advocate.

There is speculation of nuances in the case: Barrera has hinted at existing video evidence showing a conversation between Mehler and the woman that allegedly contradicts her claims. With such potentially exonerating evidence, many have raised eyebrows about the decision-making that led to Mehler’s initial arrest.

The Path Forward and Previous Allegations

Following his arrest, Mehler was ordered to stay away from the woman and posted a hefty $17,000 bond to secure his release. However, things took another troubling turn in November when Mehler faced accusations of violating that protective order. The woman alleged that he had threatened to kill both her and her son. She described his behavior as escalated and cited growing fear fueled by Mehler’s background as an attorney.

Adding a twist to the story, it’s worth mentioning that this same woman had a history of filing false accusations against a previous boyfriend, which were dismissed without charges by the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office. This raises questions about the validity of her claims and the integrity of the investigation into Mehler.

A Colorful Career Amid Controversy

Despite it all, Mehler has carried on with his legal career amidst this storm of allegations. He even represented a client who impersonated a Saudi prince in a scam that swindled over $2 million from investors. He’s developed a reputation as a “colorful” attorney, often seen at Spurs games in suits detailed with marijuana leaves, which seems fitting considering his extensive work in the cannabis industry, particularly in Colorado. Not only that, but he also plays a role on the Cannabis Law Committee of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, further solidifying his niche in the legal world.

As Mehler’s career faces the aftermath of these false allegations, it is evident that he may have endured significant professional setbacks, despite his declaration of innocence. The legal community will undoubtedly keep a close eye on how this situation unfolds moving forward.
