San Antonio is rolling into the future with its latest initiative aiming to make biking safer and easier for all residents. Just this past Wednesday, the city’s Planning Commission gave the green light to update the Bike Network Plan (BNP), a move that’s got many local folks buzzing with excitement!
Residents from the Beacon Hill neighborhood, located on the North Side, are particularly enthusiastic about this plan. Elizabeth Eichhorn, president of the Beacon Hill Area Neighborhood Association, wrote a heartfelt letter of support to the Planning Commission. She emphasized how essential mobility improvements are for their community, especially as they work on the Near North Community Area Plan.
“We have been fortunate to attract young professionals and families,” Eichhorn explained, “because of our dense urban environment that allows residents to live, eat, commune, and play nearby. However, we still have much work ahead to make walking and biking safer and more accessible for everyone.”
San Antonio’s current Bike Network Plan dates back to 2011 and, according to a city memo, it “did not address policy issues that created a barrier to cyclists.” That’s why this updated plan is considered crucial. The city’s Transportation Department has been hard at work engaging the public since May 2023 to gather input for the new plan, which promises to “define a network of safe and comfortable bike facilities.”
Emily Hutcheson, a Beacon Hill resident, expressed her thoughts on the updates in an email statement. “These updates are a step in the right direction to make bicycling in San Antonio safer, easier, and more accessible,” she said. Hutcheson, a mom and bike commuter, lives in Beacon Hill because of its convenient location for cycling.
“We love biking to places in our area,” Hutcheson added enthusiastically. However, she noted that while the current infrastructure is somewhat accommodating, there’s still much work to do. “We still need better infrastructure to protect cyclists of all ages,” she remarked, highlighting the importance of upcoming changes in the new plan.
Earlier this year, San Antonio City Council also approved an update to its Complete Streets policy, which focuses on creating safe streets for all users, not just cars. This update, combined with the Vision Zero initiative, is set to align nicely with the goals established in the Bike Network Plan.
Additionally, the Planning Commission’s approval on Wednesday was a necessary first step for more bike-related projects that are on the horizon. On the agenda for next Thursday’s council meeting is a funding agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation for a bike lane project along Market Street downtown.
The Bike Network Plan will soon be discussed at a briefing before the city’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on December 17, keeping the anticipation alive among community members eager for enhancements to their biking experiences. With the full city council likely to consider it at a meeting slated for late January, residents have every reason to stay upbeat about the future of biking in San Antonio.
As this beloved Texas city gears up for a biking renaissance, it’s clear that community voices are being heard and changes are coming that will put San Antonio on the map as a more bike-friendly city. With enthusiastic support from residents and city officials alike, it seems the Alamo City is on its way to carving out new lanes for a brighter, more connected tomorrow. So grab your helmets, San Antonio—it looks like quite the ride ahead!
