San Antonio Business Owner Triumphs at H-E-B’s Quest for Texas Best Competition

In a thrilling showcase of culinary talent, San Antonio has witnessed a remarkable achievement as local business owner Maria Flores clinched first prize at H-E-B’s 11th annual Quest for Texas Best competition this week. Her delectable chorizo seasoning has not only captured the judges’ hearts but also secured her a $20,000 cash prize.

A Nod to Heritage

Flores, the creative mind behind Hess Street Foods, introduced her chorizo seasoning paste and Mexican chorizo seasoning as a heartfelt tribute to her grandparents. “I wanted to keep my grandmother’s, my Abuelita’s, recipe alive and started trying to recreate her recipe,” Flores shared, reflecting on the legacy she belongs to.

Her grandparents briefly settled in San Antonio, purchasing a home on Hess Street before returning to their roots in Coahuila, Mexico. Flores expressed her proud sentiments, stating, “I cannot help but think, ‘Hey, Grandpa and Grandma, can you see this? You did it. You did it.’”

Recognition and Opportunity

At this prestigious competition, which celebrates innovative products from across Texas, Flores’ chorizo products stood out among a field of top contenders. Besides the financial reward, her product will soon be available on H-E-B shelves, marking a significant milestone for her growing business.

Other Winners of the Competition

The Quest for Texas Best competition revealed a range of exceptional culinary creations. The $25,000 grand prize went to Donelle Mendoza from Austin for her Birria Seasoning Bombs. Other notable winners included Meredith Sears & Family for their Certified Country Lemonade, which earned them $15,000, and Matt Balke and Hannah Davis for their Blue Corn Butterscotch Pancake Mix, taking home $10,000.

Where to Find Hess Street Foods

Residents and culinary enthusiasts can find Maria Flores’ products at the New Braunfels Farmers Market every weekend, and they can also catch her at the Bulverde Farmers Market once a month. With her recent accolade, the future looks bright for this passionate entrepreneur.
