In the heart of San Antonio, a familiar voice has recently delivered a heartfelt message that has touched many in the community. Cari Laque, who co-hosts the News Radio 1200 WOAI talk show alongside popular host Joe Pagliarulo, took to social media this past Wednesday to share some heavy news about her health. Cari revealed that she is currently battling stage 4 colorectal cancer.
On her Facebook page, Cari wrote, “Most of you know a part of the journey I am now on… Here’s my story in my son’s words.” Her son, Jacob Laque, has helped by setting up a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the substantial medical costs associated with her treatment. In her post, she welcomed kind words, prayers, and personal stories from those who have faced similar challenges.
Cari was diagnosed with colorectal cancer back in late July. As Jacob detailed on the GoFundMe page, CT scans and an MRI showed that the cancer had not only spread to her lymph nodes, but a liver biopsy confirmed the presence of two cancerous tumors as well. According to Jacob, Cari faces at least six months of chemotherapy, followed by a series of scans to see if her tumors have shrunk enough to consider surgery. Then, she will likely need more chemotherapy and possibly radiation treatments after that.
Jacob shared the emotional burden his family is feeling: “My Mom works when she can but with upcoming treatments and surgeries, that will be hard to do some days. We want to ensure she gets the best medical care possible, but with out-of-pocket costs and high deductibles, it’s a financial strain that is challenging.” His commitment to supporting Cari is evident as he added, “My Mom always makes sure we are taken care of, and I want to do the same for her.”
The news has resonated deeply with listeners and the broader San Antonio community. Although it’s not clear if Cari has talked about her cancer struggles on The Joe Pags Show, her co-host Joe Pagliarulo has previously opened up about his own battle with testicular cancer, which included surgery in May 2011. Sharing their personal journeys has been a way for both Cari and Joe to connect with their audience on a human level.
After Cari’s post, Joe also took to social media to share her GoFundMe link, urging his audience to help in whatever way they can. The overwhelming response has been heartwarming. As of Thursday afternoon, Cari’s post had accumulating over 130 comments, with many sharing their own experiences of fighting cancer. Supporters are sending love, prayers, and encouragement through their messages.
One particularly touching comment reads, “Hey lady, if you can put up with Joe Pags all these years, you have a hell of a lot of strength and tolerance. We are all out here praying for you and your family. We love you so much. Stay strong, stay faithful… you’ll be okay.” Such sentiments reflect the bond and care within the San Antonio community, showcasing how they rally around one of their own in times of need.
As the GoFundMe campaign progresses, it has raised nearly $14,000 of its $20,000 goal, underscoring the generosity and support from the community. This money will go a long way toward easing the financial burden with the impending medical treatments that Cari will undergo.
In challenging times like this, stories like Cari Laque’s remind us of the importance of community and support. Her journey may just be beginning, but the love and encouragement pouring in from those around her provides a shining light for what lies ahead.
