Mapping the Crime Hotspots

Recent investigations reveal that San Antonio experienced a total of over 21,000 car break-ins from May 2023 to 2024. Examining these incidents by zip code helps to unfold the most affected regions and provides insights for personal security enhancement. Over 1,700 cases occurred in a single zip code, with 78216 reporting the highest breach. A large fraction of these violations seems to occur within or near the North Star Mall.

According to San Antonio’s Police Department’s Community Crime Map, some hotel and restaurant parking lots in this area have seen between 40 and 60 break-ins each within the past year. In addition to 78216, other high-risk zip codes encompass a broad span of the city, with shopping centers reported as regular targets, particularly along I-10 on the Northwest side.

Community Vigilance

San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) urges locals to report any suspicious activities or attempted break-ins. They emphasized the importance of documentation to aid in monitoring recurring activities and highlighted the role of the auto theft unit in keeping these crimes at bay.

“Have it documented so we can keep track of this type of activity,” commented SAPD Sgt. Washington Moscoso.

Trend Recognition

In essence, frequent break-ins have been reported in zones with a high vehicle presence. Law enforcement agencies encourage individuals to avoid leaving valuables in their cars to deter potential burglars. In fact, one video from SAPD featured a young boy suspected of carrying a gun while conducting car burglary operations in broad daylight.

“Unfortunately, we have heard even guns being stolen from vehicles, wallets, cash…,” reported Melissa Cabello Havrda, the public safety committee’s current chair, “Don’t leave any valuables in your vehicle, and if you do, at least don’t leave them in plain sight.”

Projected Measures

In a bid to combat the increasing car break-ins, San Antonio’s city council is considering an allocation of approximately $1.4 million to the Regional Auto Crimes Task Force. This funding will primarily aid efforts to expose crime rings and apprehend individuals responsible for car break-ins.

Stay Informed. Stay Safe.

As community members, take responsibility for your safety and maintain vigilance at all times. Always remember to lock your vehicle, avoid leaving any valuables within sight, and report any suspicious activities around you.
