San Antonio police have dropped terroristic threat charges against a relative of the Robb Elementary School shooter. Nathan Cruz was arrested last August after a family member reported that he had plans to carry out a similar attack to his cousin.
The Bexar County District Attorney’s office confirmed the decision to drop the charges against Cruz, citing a lack of available witnesses and insufficient evidence to pursue the case in court.
Cruz’s cousin had entered Robb Elementary in Uvalde in May 2022 and opened fire, resulting in the tragic deaths of 19 students and two teachers.
According to jail records, Cruz had been in custody since his arrest and had not posted bond. The DA’s office emphasized the importance of community involvement and cooperation from witnesses in ensuring that justice is served.
In a statement, the Bexar County DA’s office said, “The district attorney’s ability to pursue these cases in court relies heavily on the availability of witnesses and the strength of the evidence collected.”
They further added, “We emphasize the importance of community involvement and the willingness of witnesses to come forward – as their cooperation is critical in ensuring justice is served.”
The dropping of charges against Cruz raises questions about the handling of cases involving potential threats and the complexities of determining legal responsibility in such situations.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy at Robb Elementary, the decision to drop the charges against Cruz sheds light on the challenges of prosecuting individuals for threats of violence.
The Uvalde community continues to mourn the loss of the victims from the school shooting, and efforts are ongoing to provide support and resources to those affected by the tragic events.
Authorities are urging vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious activities or threats to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of schools and public spaces.
