Hey San Antonio! It looks like our city is buzzing with a lot of opinions lately, especially concerning some hot topics like salary raises for city officials and the potential for new sports arenas. The latest poll conducted by the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has some interesting insights, which were released just a few days ago.
Between September 11 and September 16, researchers from the UTSA Center for Public Opinion Research polled a total of 692 registered Bexar County voters to get a pulse on what San Antonians are thinking about various community issues. The results? Voters seem to have a mixed bag of opinions when it comes to the city’s charter amendments, the upcoming 2025 mayoral race, and new downtown sports facilities.
It appears that many of us are not on board with the idea of a new arena for the San Antonio Spurs. The poll showed that nearly 41% of respondents were not in favor of relocating the Spurs to a downtown arena. In contrast, only 36% were in support, with nearly 12% remaining undecided. Meanwhile, when asked about a new ballpark for the San Antonio Missions, around 40% said they would favor it, while 35% were opposed.
Another key point brought up in the poll was the suggestion of salary increases for city leaders. When voters were asked how they would feel about a potential raise for city council members and the mayor, a striking more than 50% said they would likely oppose it. Additionally, a whopping 70% of respondents indicated they would not support the removal of caps on the pay and the number of years the city manager could serve. This may indicate that folks are a bit cautious when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars.
You might be surprised to learn that over 80% of voters are still unfamiliar with the charter amendments that will appear on the ballot on November 5, 2024. This is particularly notable, given that these amendments can significantly impact how our city operates. From salary raises to the governance of city officials, it seems clear there’s a lot of educating to do before election day!
Beyond the local issues, the poll also shed light on how voters might prioritize their choices this upcoming presidential election. It showed that 53% of San Antonio voters support Vice President Kamala Harris, while 35% favor former President Donald Trump. And if you were curious about the U.S. Senate race, challenger Colin Allred appears to be in a favorable position against incumbent Ted Cruz among Bexar County voters, leading 44% to 29%.
This survey is just the beginning. The UTSA team plans to conduct another poll in late October to delve deeper into what San Antonio voters think as we approach election day. It’s clear our voices matter, and it’s essential to stay informed about the important decisions coming our way in the city!
So, as we gear up for the election season, let’s make sure to stay engaged and put our voices out there. San Antonio is growing, and every opinion counts!
