San Antonio Neighbors Alarmed by Late-Night Disturbance
In the heart of San Antonio, a community is feeling the effects of a recent incident involving an intoxicated guest staying at a nearby Airbnb. Residents are understandably shaken after a series of unsettling events unfolded early Wednesday morning near the intersection of Vance Jackson Road and Callaghan Road.
A Sleepless Night for Local Residents
Darlene, a concerned homeowner who requested to remain anonymous, described how she was abruptly awoken around 3 a.m. on September 11. “I was jolted out of my sleep,” she recalled. “Two men were mumbling and acting crazy, trying to get into my home.” Darlene’s husband quickly called the police while they both did their best to keep safe.
In a twist of fate, when officers arrived, they opened the garage door only to discover that the intoxicated guests had been leaning against it and nearly fell in. Darlene remembered the bewildered expressions on the men’s faces as they told the officer they were just trying to get back to the Airbnb. “They said they weren’t from San Antonio,” she added, baffled by their audacity.
Feeling Unsafe in Their Own Homes
But the chaos didn’t stop there. As the sun began to rise, another couple in the neighborhood, Camilla and her husband, were also alerted to trouble. About an hour after Darlene’s scare, Camilla noticed their outdoor lights were on and heard strange noises. “My husband got up to check the back porch, and he saw a man right outside our sliding door trying to open it!” she recounted, her voice filled with disbelief.
This time, the man was shirtless and displayed signs of confusion. He had managed to break into Camilla’s backyard and was wreaking havoc. “He was angry, just destroying things in our backyard. He tried to pull the bulbs out from our string lights and was breaking the railings,” she said. Fortunately, they were able to alert the authorities once again.
A Disturbing Encounter
According to reports, this same individual ultimately entered the home of an 82-year-old neighbor. The elderly man woke up to find a stranger standing over him, claiming to be lost. This encounter sent ripples of fear through the community, further emphasizing the uncertain safety of their neighborhood.
Homeowners Express Frustration
Darlene pointed out that this incident is just one of many concerning occurrences in recent years linked to the Airbnb located at 9200 Rustlers Creek Drive. “It’s been five years of sleepless nights,” she lamented. “Guns, big parties—this is what I have to deal with next door.” Darlene also expressed her frustration regarding how the situation has been handled. “They act like they don’t care because they don’t live here. I didn’t work my whole life to end up in a neighborhood like this. It’s emotionally scarring,” she said.
The Response from Authorities
Police identified the man involved as Bryan Anthony Mathis, 25, who was charged with public intoxication and criminal mischief. However, as of now, no record could be found regarding his arrest. Darlene and Camilla both felt their worries were dismissed by the officers when they arrived, leaving them feeling even more vulnerable.
Airbnb and Community Concerns
In the wake of these alarming events, Airbnb has stated it is investigating the property involved. Both Darlene and Camilla hope for a swift resolution to improve safety in their community. They eagerly await a response from the property owner and manager, hoping that changes are on the horizon to restore peace in their neighborhood.
