In a strange turn of events on the evening of October 12, San Antonio found itself in the midst of a tense standoff that kept residents on the edge of their seats. It all started around 11:07 p.m. when police received a call about a disturbance involving a knife in the 1300 Block of W. Houston Street.
When officers arrived at the scene, they were greeted by a 61-year-old woman who was more than a little worried. She informed the police that a family member, 40-year-old Joe Cantu, was inside the home, armed with a knife, and had been making threats. Thankfully, others who were in the building had managed to escape to safety before the authorities arrived, leaving Cantu alone as the drama unfolded inside.
As the police assessed the situation, Cantu’s actions quickly escalated. Reports state that he could be heard breaking windows and moving furniture to fortify his makeshift barricade. You can only imagine how frantic things must have felt, with officers surrounding the home, trying to coax him out while waiting for a SWAT team to arrive.
Things took a dramatic turn at around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning when officers noticed Cantu through a window using a torch to ignite the curtains in the front room. The sight of flames flickering through the window left everyone a little on edge, prompting officials to act swiftly. Without wasting another second, the police entered the building, took Cantu into custody, and managed to put out the fire with extinguishers before it could spread any further.
As the smoke cleared, it turned out that Cantu had sustained minor injuries from the broken glass while fortifying his barricade. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. But that wasn’t the end of the story. Cantu had two active felony warrants when he was arrested and is now facing not only those charges but also new ones for terroristic threats to his family and arson of a habitation.
Fortunately, there were no reports of serious injuries to anyone else at the scene during this unsettling late-night episode. The San Antonio Police Department has stated that their investigation into the incident is ongoing, so we might hear more details as the story develops.
