San Antonio Faces Drought and Heat Ahead of Fiesta

News Summary

As Fiesta celebrations draw near, San Antonio is facing drought conditions and a forecast of above-average temperatures. With the city experiencing a significant dry spell, residents can expect highs 5-10° above average and potential thunderstorms. However, the city hopes for some rain relief before the festivities begin.

San Antonio Faces Drought Conditions and Above-Average Temperature Forecasts Ahead of Fiesta Celebrations

Hey there, San Antonio residents! As we gear up for the vibrant Fiesta celebrations beginning on April 24, it appears that the weather may not be quite as festive as we would hope. The city is currently dealing with a dry spell, and it feels like Mother Nature has been playing hard to get with those rain showers we were all expecting. What’s more, the forecast for the next week suggests that we are in for some warmer-than-usual temperatures, which is certainly making us sweat a little more than usual.

Just How Hot Is It Going to Get?

For the upcoming weekend, expect afternoon highs to hover around 5-10° above the average. To add to that, those summery southerly winds are expected to gust up to 30 mph—so hold onto your hats, folks! It’s going to be a breezy one.

If you haven’t heard yet, a whopping 68% of Texas—including our beloved San Antonio—is currently grappling with drought conditions. That’s right, we’re not alone in this struggle! Looking at historical data, San Antonio typically enjoys its first 100° day in late June, but let’s not forget the record-breaking heat of the past where triple-digit temperatures popped up as early as February in 1996 and lingered as late as September in 2021.

The Wish for Rain

With the prospect of continued dry conditions, especially during Fiesta, we can’t help but wonder if the rain will finally make an appearance. Current estimates suggest that to break this drought, we might need over 20 inches of rain—now that’s a tall order! Meanwhile, there is some hope on the horizon. Cloudy skies and light showers are expected this Friday morning, thanks to a cold front making its way through the area.

Severe Weather Ahead?

Now, here comes the twist! Keep an eye on the weather this weekend as there’s a possibility of strong thunderstorms kicking in from Friday night into Saturday, especially in western regions. You might want to be cautious as these storms could bring large hail and some serious gusty winds. As the cold front rolls in, we should see temperatures cool off a bit, dropping to the 60s and 70s. Overnight lows into Sunday might even dip to the low to mid-40s. Yes, you read that right! Parts of the Hill Country could get as chilly as the mid-30s!

Sunny Days Ahead

But don’t let that cold front bring you down for too long! Sunday is shaping up to be a gorgeous day with sunny conditions and highs that might reach an eye-popping 94°F. It looks like the warmth will stick around, as the following week continues with mostly sunny skies and similar high temperatures.

What This Means for Fiesta

As we approach Fiesta, let’s all remember to stay hydrated and look out for each other. Whether you’re enjoying the festivities or just soaking up the sun, keep an eye on the weather updates and make sure you have your sunblock ready! While we can’t change the weather, we can certainly control how we celebrate, rain or shine.

So grab those festival hats, stay cool, and let’s keep our fingers crossed for some rain to ease the drought. We’ve got this, San Antonio!
