As we find ourselves in the heart of San Antonio, it’s hard not to notice the impact of the dry weather that has been gripping our community. On June 6, 2024, we spotted dry, cracked soil in a grain sorghum field near San Benito, Texas, reminding us just how serious the situation is. This week’s forecast hints at some lovely weather with cool mornings, warm afternoons, and plenty of sunshine, but behind those blue skies lies a growing concern—as we are now experiencing our 47th consecutive day without measurable rain.
The reality is that we have officially entered the top 10 list of the longest dry spells in San Antonio’s history, trailing only behind the record-holding dry stretch of 63 days in 1993. As it stands, the entire region is facing severe to extreme drought conditions. The Hill Country, in particular, is feeling the weight of these drought levels, leaving many of us wondering when the rain might finally come.
While we did get a light sprinkle on Friday, it was hardly enough to help, bringing us minimal contributions to October’s rainfall totals. Right now, we’ve recorded just 21.29 inches of rain for the year—about 6 inches below average—and unfortunately, the driest months of the year are still ahead of us.
Looking ahead, however, there’s a potential pattern shift on the horizon that might just bring some relief. Current long-term forecasts predict a strong disturbance over the Central Plains that could push a cold front across Texas. This pattern could lead to a decent chance for rain from Halloween through the first weekend in November, and we’re all crossing our fingers for a good downpour!
In the short term, we’re seeing a high-pressure system settling over our area, which means no measurable rain is expected for the next little while. But wait—there’s a potential upside! Winds are expected to shift to a more southeasterly direction, which could bring some moisture from the Gulf of Mexico to our region. This means we might see a few sprinkles in the morning hours, possibly just before sunrise, bringing a slight glimmer of hope to our otherwise dry days.
For those waking up in San Antonio this week, you can look forward to morning temperatures hovering around the comfortable norm of 59 degrees. By the afternoon, though, expect the mercury to rise into the mid-to-upper 80s, with temperatures soaring about 8 to 10 degrees above normal. It’s turning into a warm spell, and those highs will be sitting in the middle to upper 80s.
This weekend, a weak cold front is expected to drift into our region, causing a shift in winds to a northern direction, just in time for an ever-so-slight dip in temperatures. Even with that shift, we’re still looking at highs reaching up to 10 degrees above the average of 81 degrees. So while it might cool down a smidge, it won’t be enough to draw us out of this ongoing dry spell just yet.
As the weather continues to be on our minds, let’s remember to stay informed and look out for one another. While we hope for rain, appreciating and adapting to the warm, sunny days can be a challenge too. So keep your fingers crossed for some much-needed precipitation soon, and let’s not lose hope as the season shifts!
For now, let’s enjoy what the weather brings us while keeping an eye on the forecasts. Here’s to hoping for a splash of rain in our near future!
