San Antonio Ranks Among the Nation’s Least-Educated Big Cities

The San Antonio metro area has once again found itself among the nation’s least-educated big cities, according to a recent report by WalletHub. This marks the third consecutive year that the Alamo City has landed near the bottom of the annual study.

Rankings and Methodology

Out of the 150 largest U.S. metros ranked by their education levels, San Antonio claimed the 103rd spot. WalletHub based its rankings on two key dimensions: Educational Attainment and Quality of Education/Attainment Gap.

The Educational Attainment score took into account metrics such as the share of adults over 25 with high school diplomas, college degrees, and graduate degrees. The Quality of Education/Attainment Gap score considered factors like public school system quality, average quality of local universities, and the racial education gap.

Comparison with Other Texas Metros

While San Antonio’s ranking may not be optimal, it’s not alone among Texas metros in the lower echelons of educational attainment. The Austin metro secured the 8th position, the DFW Metroplex came in at 72nd, and Houston trailed at 84th.

However, it’s worth noting that the San Antonio-New Braunfels metro was once again the least-educated big city in the Texas Triangle, with rankings of 102nd in 2023 and 105th in 2022.

Smaller Texas metros also showed lower educational attainment levels, with the Killeen-Temple metro at 120th, El Paso at 136th, and locales such as Corpus Christi, Beaumont-Port Arthur, Brownsville-Harlingen, and McAllen-Edinburg-Mission ranking among the 10 least educated U.S. metros.

National Standings

On a national scale, Ann Arbor, Michigan, clinched the top spot as the most educated U.S. metro, followed by the San Jose and D.C. areas, respectively.
