Get Ready, San Antonio! Election Season is Heating Up

As the vibrant city of San Antonio gears up for the November 5 election, early voting is already underway. Residents are casting their ballots in a pivotal race that will help shape not just Texas, but the whole country. With a mix of local and national candidates on the ballot, it promises to be an election like no other.

What’s on the Ballot?

This election, voters have the chance to weigh in on a broad range of positions, including President, U.S. Senators, and representatives for both the U.S. and Texas Houses. Voters will also have to decide on various municipal and school propositions that could directly impact their communities.

Eyes on the Presidential Race

Undoubtedly, the most-watched contest is for the presidency itself. On one hand, Donald Trump is trying to make a comeback after losing to Joe Biden in 2020. Trump’s running mate is JD Vance, a senator from Ohio. On the other side, it’s current Vice President Kamal Harris, who is making history as a potential first woman and first person of South Asian descent to hold the office. Harris has VP Biden rooting for her after he decided to step back from the race.

Do keep in mind that even though voters cast their ballots directly for candidates, the election of the president is ultimately determined by the Electoral College. Texas packs a punch with 40 electoral votes up for grabs!

Senate Showdown

Turning our gaze toward the Senate, Ted Cruz is seeking re-election. He’s up against Colin Allred, a Democratic representative from the Dallas area. This matchup is shaping up to be incredibly close, with polls showing Cruz leading Allred by a mere 3% or less. Winning this seat could have major implications for the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.

House of Representatives Battles

Skipping down to the House, one especially competitive race is taking place in Texas’ 15th congressional district, where Monica De La Cruz faces a rematch with Michelle Vallejo. De La Cruz made history by becoming the first Republican woman to represent this district last cycle, but she’s not taking Vallejo lightly this time around, especially with her previous victory margin of only 8%.

Over in the 28th congressional district, voters will decide whether to keep Henry Cuellar or give his seat to the political newcomer Jay Furman. Cuellar has faced some serious legal hurdles, yet he’s determined to keep fighting for core issues like healthcare and border security, while Furman promises to put the interests of South Texans first.

Down to the State Level

In the Texas House, John Lujan is facing a fierce battle against Kristian Carranza. With a history of fluctuating party allegiance and a firm stance on school vouchers, this race has become a hot topic in the community. Carranza fiercely opposes privatization in education, while Lujan walks the line on funding public schools.

Local City Propositions Spark Debate

San Antonio voters will also have to decide on six city charter amendments. Some of these, particularly Proposition C related to the city manager’s salary and tenure, are causing a stir among residents. Many remember the 2018 decision that initially placed caps on pay and terms, and there’s significant pushback against any attempts to reverse that.

Engage and Vote!

As we near Election Day, it’s vital for every resident in San Antonio to participate. Whether you’re voting for the future of the White House, your local representatives, or city propositions, making your voice heard is crucial.

After all, every vote counts.

So grab your friends, go over the ballot, and let’s make this election one for the books!
