San Antonio Faces Job Losses as Bimbo Bakeries Closes Facility

In a significant blow to the local economy, Bimbo Bakeries USA Inc. has announced the closure of its production facility in San Antonio, set to take place this fall. This decision affects all 138 workers at the site, as the company restructures its operations to better meet future growth demands.

Reason Behind the Closure

The San Antonio bakery, located at 512 S. Gevers, is part of Grupo Bimbo, a global food production giant. Bimbo Bakeries produces a variety of popular baked goods, including items under well-known brands like Sara Lee, Entenmann’s, Mrs Baird’s, and Thomas. According to a notice filed with the Texas Workforce Commission, the closure is part of a larger plan that also impacts two facilities in New York.

Company Statement

In a statement, Bimbo Bakeries explained that they are undergoing a “continuous review of assets” aimed at optimizing production. “After careful analysis and consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close the San Antonio bakery this fall,” the company stated. They plan to shift production to other plants in their network that are deemed more suitable for supporting the company’s growth strategy.

Timeline of Events

The planned closure is expected to culminate on October 5. While the move marks a significant loss for San Antonio, Bimbo Bakeries maintains operations in other parts of Texas, including Houston and the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Impact on Local Workforce

This closure follows similar news from Quality Custom Distribution, another company in the area, which recently announced layoffs and the closure of its Schertz warehouse affecting 57 workers, scheduled for November. These developments signal challenging times for the job market in the San Antonio region.

As the news unfolds, the local community will be watching for potential support measures for the affected workers and what the future holds for the San Antonio economy.
