The Merriman family cherishing memories while honoring their late mother.
In San Antonio, Vincent Merriman honors the legacy of his late wife, Sarah, who passed away at 34. He navigates life with their three young children while continuing his education and military service. The family cherishes memories and works together to carry forward Sarah’s indomitable spirit.
In the heart of San Antonio, Texas, a devoted husband and father is navigating life after a significant loss. Vincent Merriman, the loving husband of Sarah Merriman, who passed away on October 27, 2023, at just 34 years old due to cancer, is living each day to honor her beautiful spirit. As Vincent carries forward their shared dreams, he also takes on the challenge of raising their three young children: ten-year-old twin daughters, Harper and Tarynn, and their six-year-old son, William.
Earlier this month, the Merriman family was spotted enjoying a sunny day at a local park, showcasing their commitment to making memories despite the shadows of grief that loom over them. One can see the determination as Vincent participates in outdoor activities with his kids, teaching them the values and lessons that Sarah stood for. The family’s resilience is heartwarming; no doubt a reflection of the love and support they shared.
Vincent is no stranger to perseverance. As a dedicated 19-year veteran of the Texas Army National Guard, he has weathered many storms, both on the battlefield and in their personal lives. Currently, he is juggling his military commitments with his studies in mechanical engineering at Northwest Vista College, proving that he is not only a protector but also a provider who is dedicated to their future.
As Vincent attends classes, Harper and Tarynn are participating in an evening program at the YMCA located on the college campus, allowing their dad to balance education while keeping an eye on them. The family has faced typical ups and downs of military life, including the challenges that come with deployments and sudden absences during important milestones.
The story of Vincent and Sarah is one of deep connection—one that began in 2009 and blossomed during a BBQ after they both attended the same high school. Their romance moved quickly, with engagement occurring just two months into dating and a marriage at the Bexar County Courthouse soon after. Their journey became even more inspirational when Sarah, who had to battle juvenile idiopathic arthritis throughout her life, continued to support her family and follow her passion for photography, even winning awards for her stunning work.
In 2018, during one of Vincent’s deployments, kindness from local organizations brought a new vehicle into their lives. The van, gifted to them, provided reliable transportation after their older vehicle had broken down. It was acts of support like these that lightened the load during a difficult time, enhancing their ability to tackle the challenges that lay ahead.
Tragically, that resilience was put to the test when Sarah was diagnosed with an infected lymph node in November 2022. Her cancer journey was fraught with difficulty, yet she faced each challenge head on—leaving a lasting impression of courage on her family. Even during tough times, Vincent made it a priority to be by her side, celebrating moments like their 14th wedding anniversary in her hospital room.
Today, with Sarah’s passing, Vincent’s focus is on the future of his children. He is committed to nurturing their well-being and creating new experiences together. With support from the GI Bill and the Department of Veteran Affairs, he is furthering his education while working to instill Sarah’s legacy within their daily lives. From camping at Government Canyon State Natural Area to visiting historical sites, Vincent is determined that his children will carry forward their mother’s indomitable spirit.
While the journey ahead will not always be easy, the love and memories that once filled their home will serve as guidance for the days to come. In the face of loss, the Merriman family stands strong, weaving a tapestry of love, tradition, and enduring legacy.
