Residents Invited to Provide Feedback on Proposed Changes in the San Antonio City Charter

The City of San Antonio’s Charter Review Commission is seeking input from residents on proposed changes to the City Charter, which can be amended every two years to introduce new procedures and policies. The commission, comprising community members with diverse experiences, is responsible for researching and gathering feedback to recommend amendment changes to the City Council.

Key Areas for Input

The city is particularly interested in feedback on five key areas:

  • Independent Ethics Officer and Review Board: Suggestions on implementing an independent ethics officer and review board.
  • City Council Compensation and Term Length: Perspectives on City Council compensation and length of terms.
  • City Manager Tenure and Compensation: Input on the tenure and compensation of the city manager.
  • Council Districts and Redistricting: Feedback on council districts and redistricting.
  • Language Updates: Recommendations to update language in the City Charter to align with current laws and processes.

Public Feedback Sessions

The commission is hosting several public comment sessions to gather input from residents. Upcoming sessions include:

  • Monday, March 4: 5:30 p.m. at Central Library
  • Thursday, March 14: 5:30 p.m. at Central Library
  • Thursday, April 11: 5:30 p.m. at Central Library
  • Thursday, April 25: 5:30 p.m. at Central Library

How to Provide Feedback

Residents can share their ideas and feedback in person at the public sessions, digitally, or by phone. They can also call 3-1-1 (210-207-66000) to leave comments by phone or sign up to speak at an upcoming session here.

City Council will review the proposed amendments and decide whether they will be placed on the ballot for San Antonio voters. The commission co-chairs, Bonnie Prosser Elder and David Zammiello, encourage community participation in these significant discussions.
