San Antonio is shaking its head in disbelief after a recent health inspection uncovered disturbing conditions at a local grocery store. On October 4, the inspectors paid a visit to Supermercado Poco Loco, situated at 3414 Nogalitos, and were met with some shocking discoveries.
During the inspection, health officials found multiple pieces of raw pork carelessly stored in a shopping cart, without any protective barrier. As if that weren’t alarming enough, other raw meats—including chicken and sausage—were also mixed in that same cart. Imagine doing your grocery shopping and stumbling upon such unsanitary conditions!
When approached by a reporter, an employee claiming to be the manager said they had addressed the issues identified by inspectors. However, when the reporter asked what might be said to concerned customers, the manager redirected them to another manager. Communication seemed to be a little fuzzy, and it raised more questions than answers.
After this inspection, Supermercado Poco Loco received a score of **86**, which falls into the “acceptable” category. However, with the types of violations found, many locals are left questioning whether they should be shopping there at all.
But Supermercado Poco Loco isn’t the only establishment facing scrutiny. Wayback Burgers, located at 11707 Bandera, also received a disappointing score of **83** on October 7, following a flurry of health violations. Inspectors found that raw burger patties were being stored in a walk-in cooler that was nearly 30 degrees warmer than it should have been!
After making the alarming discovery, the staff promptly disposed of the spoiled patties. However, inconsistencies continued when inspectors noted that personal drinks were carelessly left on the cold prep line, another violation documented in their inspection report.
Meanwhile, Ellison Food Mart, found at 7019 Ray Ellison, has received a reinspection after proving to be quite the hot spot for health violations. During the initial check, inspectors found live and dead roaches crawling around the food mart! Employees admitted to not using any sanitizer when cleaning dishes and were perplexed about needing to use cleaning products like bleach. Adding to these shocking revelations, a bag of shredded cheese was found left out at 73 degrees when it should be kept below 41 degrees to maintain safety!
These health inspection results make it clear that something may need to change in our local food establishments. Though some restaurants, like Nadler’s Bakery & Deli and Hangtime Bar and Patio, were able to score impressively with **99 and 98**, respectively, the violations noted at others indicate a broader concern about patron safety.
As the San Antonio community becomes more aware of food safety standards and health violations, residents should remain vigilant. If you notice any irregularities while shopping or dining, it’s always a good idea to voice your concerns. After all, it’s your health that’s at stake!
The community deserves transparency and assurance that every meal, drink, and snack from local establishments is safe to eat. As we continue to uncover these alarming health conditions, everyone should stay informed so we can all shop and dine with confidence.
For anyone interested in keeping an eye on our local restaurants and their health scores, it’s worth following these inspections closely. Let’s hope our local stores and restaurants raise their standards; after all, we all want to enjoy our meals without a side of worry!
