San Antonio is home to a remarkable group that goes the extra mile to support vulnerable children in their most difficult times. The San Antonio Guardians of the Children is a dedicated organization characterized by a simple yet powerful slogan: “When a child calls, we ride.” This phrase encapsulates their commitment to being present for kids who need a helping hand as they navigate the often daunting world of court cases and child abuse.
At the heart of the organization is a caring community who wear their passion on their sleeves, quite literally. Members of this group sport black leather-cut vests emblazoned with the word “Guardians” on their backs, signifying their readiness to support children in distress. The Child Liaison of the Guardians, affectionately known as Bananas, emphasizes the importance of connection, stating, “So I always encourage them, Hey, we’re your cheerleader. You know, you’re not alone in this.” This spirit of camaraderie reassures children that they are not alone in facing overwhelming situations.
Devin “Shark Bait” Abscher, who serves as the President of the San Antonio chapter, highlights the ongoing challenges that many kids face during their court experiences. “The process of testifying and resolving a case can be lengthy,” Shark Bait explains. In fact, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services reported that Bexar County ranked as the third worst county in Texas for child abuse in 2020. This alarming statistic illustrates the urgent need for organizations like the Guardians of the Children.
A unique aspect of the Guardians’ approach is their practice of “adopting” children in their care. This isn’t a legal adoption, but rather a heartfelt commitment to be there for kids when they need it most. When a child is adopted by the Guardians, they receive a personalized leather-cut vest and have the opportunity to choose a biker name for themselves. This process is less about the garments and more about building a sense of identity and belonging.
But the Guardians don’t stop at supporting children directly. They are also proactive in educating the community about child abuse. The organization has laid out eight crucial steps that anyone can take if they suspect child abuse is occurring. By empowering the community with knowledge and resources, the Guardians aim to create a safer environment for all children.
Living in a community that ranks high in child abuse cases can be disheartening, but organizations like the San Antonio Guardians of the Children are shining examples of hope and strength. Through their dedication, advocacy, and unwavering support, they encourage children to recognize their worth and that there are others who care deeply for them. Whether they’re donning their vests or tirelessly working to inform the community, these guardians truly embody what it means to be a protector.
As the Guardians of the Children continue their mission in San Antonio, they call on everyone to be cowinners in the fight against child abuse. So, the next time you see a group of bikers in black vests riding through town, remember their motto: “When a child calls, we ride.” Together, we can ensure that no child feels alone in their struggle.
