San Antonio Authorities to Hold Hazardous Waste Collection Event

The City of San Antonio is taking important strides in waste management this weekend, as the Solid Waste Management Department hosts the hazardous waste collection event this Saturday on East Side. The organization invites local residents to responsibly dispose of their hazardous household waste and materials.

Event Details

From 8 a.m. to noon, the Rigsby Bulky Drop-Off Center at 2755 Rigsby Rd will open its gates to residents carrying hazardous materials. These may include auto fluids, batteries, cooking oil, e-waste, fluorescent light fixtures, household cleaners, lacquer, shellac, furniture polish, oil filters, paint, pesticides, printer cartridges, and pool chemicals.

Items Not Accepted

While they welcome a variety of materials, there are a few exceptions. Ammunition or fireworks, commercial or medical waste, medicine, or trash are not accepted during this collection event.

Key Guidelines to Follow

The City of San Antonio established some guidelines for this event’s operations. Residents must bring a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the Environmental Fee and a picture ID. Keeping the contents in their original containers is a requirement unless the container is leaking. In that case, the contents need to be transferred to a leak-proof or lined cardboard box. Different materials cannot be mixed in the same container or bag.

During transportation, all items must be placed in a box and put in the trunk or truck bed. A technician will unload the materials and, upon request, return the containers. However, if any materials are brought in a non-approved container, they will not be returned. The overall limit for paint and other liquid waste is five 5-gallon cans or twenty-five 1-gallon cans with a 220-pound limit.

Upcoming Monthly Drop-Off Events

Aside from the quarterly event, the City of San Antonio Solid Waste Management organizes monthly drop-off events during the summer. Residents can find more details about the monthly events here.

Responsible Waste Disposal: An Essential Community Effort

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection event aims to ensure residents have the opportunity and the understanding of how to responsibly dispose of harmful materials. These gatherings significantly impact the environmental health of the community and beyond, as hazardous wastes managed poorly can have devastating effects on our ecosystem and public health.
