San Antonio Students Take a Stand against Fentanyl
In a proactive effort to combat the rising issue of fentanyl abuse, senior students of Rise Inspire Academy situated in San Antonio organized a unique festival this Saturday. The primary objective of the event was to bring light to the menacing perils of Fentanyl—a potent synthetic opioid driving one of the deadliest drug crises.
F.E.A.R. Fest: Fentanyl Education, Awareness, and Recovery
Tagged “F.E.A.R. Fest”, the event represented an acronym for Fentanyl Education, Awareness, and Recovery. The whole event was orchestrated by Zachary Combs, a senior student, and his fellow classmates—all of whom are recovering from their battles against substance abuse. Having gone through the fight against substance abuse themselves, these students intended to leverage their stories to encourage and inspire others.
Speaking about his transformative journey, Zachary Combs said, “Going from somebody who was using drugs every day and having, really, no hope to speaking in front of an audience and sharing my story…It really helps with my recovery. I know it really helps the people around me, too.”
Highlighting the Dangers of Fentanyl
The principal objective of the festival was to educate individuals on the various dangers of fentanyl. Presentations incorporated in the program underscored facts about the synthetic opioid known to be 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. Beyond its medical application for intense pain management, it has unfortunately found its way into the illicit drugs market, resulting in a significant number of accidental overdose deaths.
The event also sought to raise awareness of the rising cases of fentanyl abuse and the need for community involvement in destigmatizing addiction, which is a critical element in recovery.
Fueling the Path to Recovery
Fellow classmates of Combs, recovering from substance abuse, shared their unique stories throughout the event. Their narratives provided a heartfelt insight into their struggles with fentanyl, bringing an everyday perspective to the opioid crisis. These students are living testimonials that recovery is indeed possible with early intervention, targeted education, and community support.
The F.E.A.R. Fest provides a model for similar initiatives aimed at tackling drug abuse at the community level.
