San Antonio’s Groundbreaking Visionary: A Journey of Inclusion and Innovation

In the heart of San Antonio, a remarkable story of dedication and innovation unfolds. Gordon Hartman, often referred to as a true Solutionary, has been reshaping the world for individuals with special needs. His journey started with a simple yet powerful idea that eventually blossomed into the world’s first all-inclusive theme park, Morgan’s Wonderland. Since its inception, Hartman has expanded his mission, spearheading a series of initiatives aimed at creating a more inclusive society.

The Spark of Inspiration

Hartman’s journey toward creating Morgan’s Wonderland began because of his beloved daughter, Morgan. “I thought about how many families like ours out there might not have the same resources,” he shared. His desire was to build something where families could enjoy themselves without the usual stress that comes with outings for children with special needs.

Reflecting on his early days, Hartman recounted the entrepreneurial spirit that began in his childhood. “I started walking dogs for 50 cents and realized that if I had several dogs, I could make a bit more,” he chuckled. This entrepreneurial mindset paved the way for his diverse career, from landscaping to a successful homebuilding business. However, it was not until the mid-2000s that he would embark on a path driven by purpose.

Breaking New Ground

In 2005, Hartman took a leap of faith. He sold his businesses, and with a heart full of passion and a steadfast belief in inclusion, he laid the groundwork for Morgan’s Wonderland. “This was a complete unknown,” he admitted. “But I believed in what we were doing and knew that it had the potential to change lives.”

Opened in 2010, Morgan’s Wonderland welcomes individuals of all abilities. The park is designed with thoughtful features, allowing everyone to participate and enjoy without barriers. Hartman exemplifies such inclusivity by pointing out the unique elements of the park. “Here’s our 4D Theater, where individuals in wheelchairs can feel the same thrill of the ride,” he explained, highlighting how each aspect of the park fosters a sense of belonging.

A Symphony of Inclusion

Exploring the music area in the park, Hartman’s passion shines through. “This isn’t just about rides; it’s about creating a symphony of enjoyment.” The instruments are crafted to be accessible and sensitive to different abilities. Carefully designed not to be sensory-overloading, they obey the rule of keeping the sound within a comforting range.

Through his unwavering commitment, Hartman and his team listened to the voices in the special needs community. They held town halls, consulted with doctors and therapists, and engaged with families to tailor the park’s offerings. This hands-on approach ensures that the park’s features resonate with those they serve.

Growth and Expansion

What started as a singular theme park has flourished into a network of services. Hartman opened Inspiration Island in 2017, the world’s first ultra-accessible water park. With warm water tailored for individuals sensitive to temperature changes, the water park allows everyone to experience joy by the water.

In 2021, Morgan’s Camp made waves, offering a summer camp experience where inclusivity is at the forefront. Hartman revealed the innovative challenge course, enchanting both those with disabilities and their able-bodied peers. “It’s about creating shared experiences where everyone can shine,” he said proudly.

Looking to the Future

Expansion continued with a vast variety of projects, including the creation of the Morgan’s Multi Assistance Center. This hub offers resources for families dealing with various challenges, from medical needs to food security. “We want to ensure families aren’t left falling through the cracks,” Hartman emphasized.

What’s next for Hartman? He’s already planning the Morgab Inclusion Campus—a space designated for global learning from the successes of Morgan’s Wonderland. “We’ve made too much progress to stop now,” he stated confidently.

Fulfillment Through Belief

Reflecting on the profound impact Morgan’s Wonderland has had on families, he shared heartfelt anecdotes of emotional moments witnessed at the park. “I’ve seen teenagers cry here because they’ve never been on a swing. That’s the essence of what we do,” he said, eyes twinkling with empathy.

Hartman’s journey is a testament to the power of belief—a belief in vision, community, and most importantly, in people. As he looks to the future, he encourages everyone who desires to make a difference to hold onto their ideas. “Take the leap! What if it works?” he smiles, emphasizing the idea that great things stem from passion, connection, and risk.

In the vibrant city of San Antonio, the legacy of Gordon Hartman continues to flourish, inviting everyone to join the journey of inclusion and joyful celebration for all.
