San Antonio, we’ve had a tough weekend as reports surface about a heart-wrenching incident involving a local police K-9 and three neighbor dogs. It’s a situation that could have and should have been avoided, leaving the community in shock and sorrow.
On a sunny Saturday afternoon around noon, the peaceful atmosphere in a quiet neighborhood quickly turned chaotic. The incident unfolded in the 9300 block of Lands Point Street when three dogs managed to break through their owner’s fence. Once loose, they made their way to an adjacent property where they came across an SAPD K-9 officer.
As the three dogs began to attack the K-9, chaos ensued. The officer who handled the K-9 was actually off-duty at the time and found himself in a frightening situation where he couldn’t separate the brawling pups. In a panic to stop the skirmish, he fired several shots. Unfortunately, this decision led to devastating consequences, as both the barking dogs and the K-9 were struck by the gunfire.
The K-9 was rushed to a nearby veterinary clinic but, tragically, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. To add to the sorrow, one of the three dogs involved in the fight also died. One remaining dog is still fighting for its life at the clinic, leaving the owner, Amanda Harris, filled with uncertainty. “We don’t know if she’s going to make it,” Harris shared with heartache.
Harris described the moment of impact as surreal. “I didn’t hear anything until a woman screamed. There were no dogs whining, no barking, nothing,” she recounted. Understandably distraught, she vividly remembers how her husband rushed out, calling for their dogs, only to be met with the sound of gunshots following an already tense situation.
As the investigation continues, Animal Care Services (ACS) has taken action. The owner of the three dogs is facing serious charges with six citations issued, which include two counts each of dogs roaming off-property, damaging private property, and failing to prevent a dog from biting another animal. It’s important to note that fines can reach as high as $2,000, depending on court assessments.
The gravity of the situation has prompted both the SAPD’s Shooting Team and Internal Affairs Unit to step in and conduct a thorough investigation. Meanwhile, the officer involved has been placed on administrative duty during this process.
Technically, the story doesn’t end here. As authorities finish their investigations, there’s potential for additional charges or citations. The community of San Antonio is undoubtedly shaken, wondering what could have been done differently. Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this tragic incident.
As we reflect on this sad event, it serves as a reminder of how quickly things can take a turn for the worse and how vital it is for pet owners to ensure their furry family members remain safe and secure. Let’s come together as a community to support those affected and promote responsible pet ownership to prevent such tragedies in the future.
