Two San Antonio Lakes to be Stocked with Catfish for the Next Six Months

Channel Catfish Coming to San Antonio Waters

San Antonio, Texas – Two local lakes, Miller’s Pond and the Southside Lions Park, are about to become a haven for anglers as they are set to be stocked with channel catfish. The stocking, which is part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Neighborhood Fishin’ program, will begin this weekend.

Texas Lakes to Receive Catfish Stocking

Starting this Friday, April 12, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will be stocking 18 lakes across Texas, including the two in San Antonio. The stocking will occur every two weeks and will continue through until the end of October, excluding the month of August due to high temperatures. The goal of the stocking is to promote recreational fishing and encourage families to spend time outdoors and connect with nature.

Details of the San Antonio Locations

  • Southside Lions Park: Situated at 3100 Hiawatha St
Fishing in San Antonio – Things to Know

Fishing in these two venues promises plenty of fun for anglers of all ages and experience levels. The TPWD recommends using strong-smelling baits like chicken livers, nightcrawlers, shrimp, stinkbait, or even cut hot dogs to attract the catfish.

It’s important to note that adults looking to fish will need to secure a license. This can be purchased at a cost starting from $11 for a one-day, all-water access license. Children aged 16 and younger can fish for free. Licenses can be bought at local retailers or online.

A maximum of two poles per person can be used in Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes. The usage of trotlines, jug lines, fish traps, seines, cast nets, bows, and spears is strictly prohibited. Bag limits for channel and blue catfish are set at five per day, with no minimum length limit. Each person fishing is entitled to their own daily bag limit.

Dust off your fishing gear and get ready for a ‘reel-y’ good time in San Antonio’s stocked lakes. Get outdoors and enjoy the bountiful natural resources of the Lone Star state.
