San Antonio’s burgeoning food scene sustained a blow after Diez Flores, an up-and-coming Latin gastropub, ceased operations only six months after launching.
Diez Flores, located in Southtown, made the announcement via a heartfelt social media statement but did not detail the reasons behind the decision to close. Amid a challenging climate for small businesses in the city, current issues afflicted local businesses include construction projects and escalating rental costs. “This place has been more than just a business,” they shared via a social media statement. “It’s been a home, a gathering spot, and a community hub where countless memories have been made.”
Diez Flores opened its doors in December 2023 under the stewardship of Tatu Herrera, owner of Folklores Coffee House, and bar industry expert Hector Vargas. The gastropub sought to celebrate a rich tapestry of Latin cuisines through an offering of sandwiches, salads, and small bites designed for sharing. While the interior dècor deviated from the modern picture-perfect layout, their array of cocktails adorned with fresh flowers or edible gold leaf, along with artfully plated dishes, made it a favorite amongst food photographers.
Like Folklores, Diez Flores sought to be more than just a dining place, with a full program of karaoke nights, live music, and themed evenings echoing the cultural emphasis of the eatery, including weekly Noche Latina Sabados. All these endeavors, however, were not enough to keep the business operational. San Antonio, once dominated by unique and creative concepts such as Diez Flores, struggles to retain its individuality in a rapidly evolving food and hospitality scene.
Despite this recent setback, San Antonio remains endowed with an array of dependable dining places providing an eclectic mix for Father’s Day feast options. Notable among these are the underground dinners series evolving with star chefs, and a top chef who narrowly missed winning the prestigious James Beard Award.
In other local news, independent establishments continue to make a significant impact amid a food scene often dominated by corporate brands. Despite the closure of Diez Flores, the city welcomed gourmet burgers establishment, Muck & Fuss, with a new outlet in the pipeline. Also, a new Mexican concept, Nixtamali Molino + Comedor, is poised to launch in the former location of Southtown Pizzeria.
While the San Antonio food and dining scene celebrate these new entrants, the narrative underscores the enduring need to support local, independent businesses, and the vital cultural diversity they contribute to the ever-evolving city.
