San Antonio is facing a wave of layoffs, with hundreds of employees impacted across various industries so far this year. According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, more than 880 workers have been affected by job cuts in Bexar County.
Significant layoffs have been reported from multiple companies, revealing the harsh realities of job loss in the area:
While the number of layoffs is concerning, local economists suggest that the impact may not be as severe as it seems. David McPherson, chair of the Economics Department at Trinity University, commented that despite the layoffs, the size of the overall workforce in San Antonio minimizes the economic toll. “It’s not going to have a big impact on the economy. It’s going to affect these workers,” he noted.
Workforce Solutions Alamo, under the direction of James Keith, is stepping in to help those who have lost their jobs. “We offer resources and career centers across the area, aiming to assist people in getting back to work,” Keith explained. Workers may have the opportunity to transition into different industries and receive training tailored to their skills.
Interestingly, while some sectors are shrinking, others are thriving. Keith pointed out significant growth in the construction industry, with companies like Toyota and JCB expanding in the area. “There are still jobs opening up, providing opportunities for those looking to transition,” he added.
The situation in Bexar County reflects a complex job market, with a need for support for those affected by recent layoffs. As industries continue to evolve, the availability of resources and training could help many of these individuals find new employment opportunities.
