San Antonio Man Receives Life Sentence for Murder of Local Bank Patron

San Antonio Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murder

In a heartbreaking yet significant turn of events for the community of San Antonio, a man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Lucio Gustavo Carmona III. The verdict was delivered on Monday by an Atascosa County jury, which quickly deliberated for just 25 minutes before reaching their decision. The case revolves around a shocking crime that took place on January 3, 2023, leaving a family and a community grappling with tragedy.

Details of the Crime

David Taije Castleberry, 27, was convicted of the tragic death of Carmona, whose body was discovered on the side of Tessman Road in Pleasanton. It was revealed during the trial that Carmona had gone to the bank to cash a check for $1,400, a trip that would ultimately lead to his untimely demise.

Castleberry, along with his girlfriend Clarissa Guillen, 23, was apprehended two days later on January 5. They were tracked down by the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office to a hotel on the west side of San Antonio. During the trial, it became clear that Castleberry shot Carmona in the back seat of a Mitsubishi Mirage before callously dumping his body.

Trial Testimonies and Revelations

Throughout the trial, Castleberry showed no remorse for his actions. His defense attorney, Adrian Perez, attempted to shift blame onto Guillen, arguing she was responsible for the shooting. However, the emotional testimony from Guillen painted a different picture.

In a moment that left the jury visibly shaken, Guillen recounted how Castleberry demanded money from Carmona at gunpoint before pulling the trigger. She fearfully explained that after the shooting, Castleberry threatened her as well and then forced her to drive after he took her phone.

Testimony from being a friend of both Castleberry and Carmona revealed that Carmona had sought a ride to the bank to cash his check. The manipulative dynamics of the couple, brought to light through vivid surveillance footage and witness statements, showed a disturbing reality leading up to the murder.

Evidence Paints a Grim Picture

The investigation unfolded with mounting evidence against Castleberry and Guillen. The Mitsubishi Mirage was meticulously examined by authorities. Inside, they found a purse stuffed with cash, ammunition, and even a 9mm gun with blood stains further solidifying the case against them. Pathologists confirmed that Carmona had suffered a fatal gunshot wound that would claim his life in mere minutes.

A Family’s Heartbreak

As victim impact statements were made, emotions ran high. Carmona’s sister, Alexia Villa, expressed her grief, saying, “I had to make funeral arrangements for my baby brother five and a half months after burying my mom.” With each word, she conveyed the deep sense of loss and injustice felt by the family.

Carmona’s family described him as a vibrant soul, one who battled Leukemia but never let it dampen his positivity or zest for life. His brother, Johnny Torres, lovingly remembered him as a steadfast rock for the family, someone who cherished every moment spent together.

The Path Forward

While Castleberry now faces a life sentence, the community is still grieving. Guillen is expected to face her own trial for her involvement in the crime, and many hope that justice will prevail once more. As the dust settles from this harrowing chapter, San Antonio remains resilient, united in support for the Carmona family as they navigate the difficulties ahead.
