San Antonio Man Embarks on Cross-Country Run to Support Families Affected by Addiction

San Antonio Man Runs Across the Country for a Greater Cause

In a heartwarming tale of courage and dedication, a man from San Antonio is lacing up his running shoes for an extraordinary cause. Kenneth Anderlitch, a determined individual with personal ties to the struggles of addiction, is making a significant cross-country journey to raise awareness and funds for families affected by substance abuse.

A Long Journey Begins

On September 20, Anderlitch kicked off his impressive journey from the vibrant streets of Washington, D.C. With a goal in mind, he is running approximately 40 miles a day, all the way back to his hometown of San Antonio. This ambitious endeavor isn’t just about the miles; it’s about making a genuine difference in the lives of those who face the same battles he once did.

Creating a Safe Space for Families

The heart of Anderlitch’s mission is to raise money for a unique recovery center that will provide a safe haven for families dealing with addiction. Unlike traditional facilities where separation from loved ones is a common concern, this center will allow individuals in treatment to stay with their children. “Sometime in 2025, hopefully, there is a facility that’s open for families that are predominantly needing recovery but trying not to put that worry on where the kids are going to be placed,” he expressed with hopeful determination.

According to Terri Behling, director of communications at Haven for Hope, where Anderlitch has also found support, his journey is shining a light on an urgent need in their community. “Kenneth’s journey not only raises awareness in San Antonio but also in the communities he passes through,” Behling noted.

A Personal Motivation

What motivates Anderlitch is deeply personal. He lost his mother to an overdose when he was just 20 years old, and this painful experience fuels his desire to help others. He reflects on her battle and shares, “I can say that she probably would have never chosen treatment if it meant being away from us.” This insight drives him to ensure that no family has to face that choice.

Raising Awareness Beyond Running

Anderlitch’s campaign goes beyond simply putting one foot in front of the other. Along the way, he has been meeting with various nonprofits that specialize in recovery and homelessness, raising their profiles and helping to highlight the critical services they provide. “It is an illness that can be treated if the person is supported,” he asserts, emphasizing the importance of a supportive community.

His message is clear: families grappling with addiction deserve understanding and compassion, rather than judgment. With every step, Anderlitch hopes to foster this outlook in the hearts of those he encounters on his journey.

Looking Ahead

As he pushes through each day, captivating communities along the way, Anderlitch remains flexible with his return timeline. As he approaches Texas, he plans to amp up his mileage, aiming to complete his remarkable run by November 5.

Your Chance to Support

In a world where addiction affects so many, Anderlitch’s journey serves as a beacon of hope. Through grit, determination, and a lot of running, he is reminding us all that recovery is not just possible but can also be a family-inclusive experience.
