San Antonio’s local franchisee of the Slim Chickens chain is setting the stage for a big expansion. Dan McGrath, the man behind the plan, is preparing to open a fourth local store and revealed that he is eyeing up to a dozen more locations in the city and surrounding areas.
McGrath’s next store location will be at 14121 Culebra Road, which is set to launch next week. However, his vision for Slim Chickens in San Antonio extends far beyond that. He said, “At this point, we have set our sights on building out the San Antonio [market] before we move up the I-35 corridor.”
McGrath also hinted at the potential number of new locations expected to arise, stating, “While I can’t give a definite number, San Antonio is one of the fastest-growing markets in the U.S., and the brand has been very well received. I wouldn’t be surprised if greater San Antonio alone could handle 12 to 15-plus locations.”
Behind this grand plan is Big Star Hospitality, an Austin-based firm headed by McGrath. With his over a decade of corporate restaurant experience with brands like Arby’s and Dunkin Donuts, McGrath has proven his competence in the restaurant industry.
Currently, McGrath owns the Slim Chickens stores in both Austin and San Antonio, as well as a new 25-unit addition in Ohio, covering Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus. His plans for further expansion are based on recognizing similar demographic metrics between Texas and Ohio, believing that the brand would be welcomed by these communities.
Slim Chickens is more than just chicken; it offers a variety of southern-inspired sides such as fried okra and macaroni and cheese. The brand operates 250 locations across America, the U.K., and Kuwait.
The new San Antonio store alone is projected to create approximately 100 new jobs in the area, offering a significant boost to the local economy.
With such ambitious plans, all eyes are now on Slim Chickens and how the brand, under the stewardship of McGrath and Big Star Hospitality, will realize its San Antonio expansion.
