News Summary
Gina Ortiz Jones is gaining traction in the San Antonio mayoral race, now leading by nearly 13% according to a recent poll. With 27 candidates in the running, a significant portion of voters remain undecided. Other candidates like John Courage and Beto Altamirano are also garnering attention. As the election date approaches, the political landscape remains fluid, marking a critical moment for both candidates and voters. Additionally, public support for Project Marvel is declining, further complicating the civic atmosphere.
Gina Ortiz Jones Gaining Momentum in San Antonio Mayoral Race!
San Antonio is buzzing with excitement as the mayoral race heats up! A new poll shows that Gina Ortiz Jones has expanded her lead to an impressive nearly 13%, shaking things up in the race to become the next mayor. The survey was conducted by the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Center for Public Opinion Research (CPOR) from April 7-9, 2025, and gathered insights from 685 likely voters.
Charting New Waters
Just a few months ago in February, Ortiz Jones held a narrower lead of 9.3%. Now, she’s pulling ahead significantly! But it’s not all smooth sailing. The race features a whopping 27 candidates vying for the mayoral seat, and 18 of them are struggling to break the 1% mark in the polls.
Who Else Is Making Waves?
While Ortiz Jones takes the spotlight, other candidates are also making strides. John Courage is not too far behind with a support of 7%. Rounding out the pack are Beto Altamirano and Rolando Pablos, both reporting over 5% support. Notable mentions include Manny Pelaez, Melissa Cabello Havrda, Adriana Rocha Garcia, Clayton Perry, and Tim Westley, all of whom are within the 3% to 5% range. The growth in support is particularly notable for Ortiz Jones, Pablos, Altamirano, and Westley since the last polling.
Voter Uncertainty Looms
Despite Ortiz Jones’ lead, a considerable 45.2% of voters still feel undecided or are unfamiliar with the candidates. This uncertainty hints at a potentially lively race as early voting approaches. CPOR’s director describes the atmosphere of the race as “very fluid,” which implies that things could shift dramatically in the days leading up to the election.
What’s at Stake?
The big day is May 3, and if no candidate manages to snag more than 50% of the votes, the top two contenders will go head-to-head in a runoff on June 7. Voter engagement is key as supporters eagerly gear up for the decision that could shape San Antonio’s future.
Project Marvel Suspended in Mid-Air!
On another front, the proposed downtown sports and entertainment district, dubbed Project Marvel, has seen a decline in support among the public. Since February, opposition has increased from 36% to a significant 44%, while backing for the project has dwindled to 34% from 41%. This marks a pivotal moment for the project. Additionally, support for plans to build a new arena for the San Antonio Missions has also fallen below 40% for the first time in polling history.
Mixed Feelings about the City’s Direction
San Antonio residents seem to have mixed feelings about how their city is progressing. Currently, 48% of voters believe San Antonio is moving in the right direction—a slight dip from 50% just a couple of months ago. Comparatively, perspectives on state and national directions don’t seem too rosy, with 53% and 62% of the population expressing concerns that things are headed in the wrong direction.
The upcoming weeks promise to be dynamic as candidates ramp up their efforts to connect with voters. Stay tuned, San Antonio! The race for your next mayor is just getting started!
