San Antonio Prepares for a Metal Surge with Crypta Live at Vibes Event Center

San Antonio Set to Rock with Crypta

San Antonio, get ready to crank up the volume because a powerhouse of an all-female metal band, Crypta, is coming to the Vibes Event Center this Saturday, October 12. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you’re in for a treat! This group of talented musicians has not only carved out their own niche in the heavy music scene but also secured respect and recognition from some of the biggest names in metal.

Revamping Their Sound

Following their time with Nervosa, bassist-vocalist Fernanda Lira and drummer Luana Dametto wanted something different. “We just wanted to have a different creative outlet,” Fernanda shared during a phone call after a soundcheck in New Jersey. Crypta was originally meant to be a side project, but it quickly evolved into a full-blown entity that embraces death metal while still being distinct.

While Nervosa primarily focused on thrash metal, Crypta leans into the realms of death metal, a genre they both love deeply. “It was some sort of obvious choice for us since it’s the genre we resonate with,” Fernanda remarked. The band’s sound is a blend of classic old-school death metal mixed with modern elements, creating a musical experience that’s both atmospheric and intense.

A Dive into the Lyrics

When it comes to lyrics, this band takes a more personal approach than many of their peers. Rather than diving into themes of blood and gore, they explore deeper issues like battling depression and overcoming adversity. Fernanda explained, “I was going through some hardships, and that was inspirational to me. I wanted to approach the darkness and gloomy vibes that death metal requires but focus on personal stuff that people could relate to.” This unique lyrical stance sets them apart in the genre and helps create a deeper connection with fans.

The Evolving Sound of Shades of Sorrow

With their latest album, Shades of Sorrow, the band has showcased an evolution in their sound. While their first record, Echoes of the Soul, was more of a trial in figuring out their identity as a band, the second album is where they truly hit their stride. Fernanda shared that their writing process now is a lot more cohesive. “We knew already what we wanted, what felt exciting to play,” she said, indicating that the band has really come into their own with this album.

The Brazilian Metal Scene Influence

Growing up in Brazil, a country rich with its own heavy music history, Fernanda noted how their surroundings inspired their sound. “I think it kind of reflects on the music we play. It’s really hard surviving there, so we all, at some point, used our music as our dearest way of expressing ourselves.” That raw energy and emotional depth find their way into every note they play, and it’s part of what makes them stand out.

Challenges of Being Women in Metal

Despite their growing success, being women in a male-dominated genre presents its own set of challenges. Fernanda reflected on her experiences: “It was tough in the beginning, and it still is. We go through stuff you can’t even imagine,” she said, noting how easy it is for others to dismiss female musicians. “I always felt that whenever I was on stage. I had to prove people that we can do this too.” Yet, she also praised the increasing acceptance of women in the metal scene, recognizing a shift towards more inclusive audiences.

Get Ready for a Night of Metal Mayhem

With headliners Hatebreed and support from heavyweights like Carcass and Harm’s Way alongside Crypta, you won’t want to miss this high-octane show. Tickets are reasonably priced at $39.50-$45, and the event kicks off at 6 p.m. at Vibes Event Center, located at 1211 E. Houston St. San Antonio is in for a metal night that promises to shake the walls and get heads banging! Make sure you’re there!
