San Antonio Woman Honors Daughter with Foundation for Domestic Violence Awareness
In the heart of San Antonio, a brave mother is turning her heartbreak into hope. Mariah Gardner, a survivor of domestic violence, is establishing the Willow Grace Foundation in memory of her daughter, Willow, who tragically lost her life due to an abusive situation. This initiative comes at a poignant time as we enter October, recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
A Mother’s Heartbreak
It has been nearly a year and a half since an unthinkable event shattered Gardner’s life. During a brutal attack, she and her daughters, Rosalie and Willow, were victims of violence, resulting in Willow’s untimely death. Gardner’s ex-partner, who is the biological father of the girls, faces charges related to the attack that claimed Willow’s life.
“That is a price that she should have never had to pay, but I will do everything in my power to honor that sacrifice,” Gardner expressed, with a voice full of determination and love. “And I will never forget.”
Creating Change
The launch of the Willow Grace Foundation is not only an emotional tribute but also a solid commitment to instigating change within the community and beyond. “In Texas, we aren’t even recognizing most of the aspects of what domestic violence is,” Gardner pointed out, elaborating on the often-overlooked elements such as verbal abuse and emotional trauma.
She brought to light how these forms of abuse can manifest, noting, “The sustained emotional distress, the patterns of manipulation and coercion that have proven to be key indicators,” can often be the precursors to more dangerous situations. With her foundation, Gardner aims to broaden existing domestic violence laws and raise awareness about the different forms abuse can take.
Empowering Victims
Gardner’s ultimate goal is to provide resources and support to those looking to escape abusive relationships. “We don’t know what a person is going to need in those extremely dangerous moments,” Gardner said, stressing the importance of understanding the complexities that come with leaving an abuser. “They’re already trying to survive. They’re trying to fight for their life.”
She passionately believes in the necessity of having safety measures in place even before a crime occurs. “In my case, the first act of physical violence was murder,” Gardner stated. Her experience showcases how vital it is to recognize the signs early on.
A Community Effort
One integral part of the Willow Grace Foundation will be community involvement. Gardner sees the potential for hope and healing through collective effort. “I love her (Willow) and miss her, and I would just remind her that, even though her life was so short, her impact will be so great,” she reflected, showcasing her visionary commitment to both remembrance and advocacy.
