The owner, concerned that the mural needed a fresh look, had reached out to Blancas, mistakenly believing he had the authority to alter it.
It turns out that Blancas informed the owner that he would repaint the mural using funds sourced from sponsors. However, this led to a rather unfortunate outcome, as it involved replacing the bright colors of the original mural with a dull coat of gray paint. After getting word of the situation, SACA hurriedly reached out to the building owner, clarifying that they should be consulted about any decisions tied to the mural in question.
The building owner reacted with regret upon realizing the mix-up, expressing a desire to work alongside the community to restore the mural back to its former glory. How wonderful it is to see local business owners and residents rallying together in support of their artistic heritage!
In a curious twist, it seems that Blancas had previously sought permission to “re-imagine” the mural both in 2019 and 2022, but SACA denied his requests on both occasions.
