San Antonio’s local music scene is set to get a boost with the upcoming release of a music video by local Chicano soul group, Joaquin and the Glowliners. The band will debut the video for its single “I Remember” at a premiere party at Slab Cinema Art House, part of the Blue Star Arts Complex, this coming Friday.
Joaquin and the Glowliners are known for keeping the soul of San Antonio alive with their particular flavor of West Side Sound. The group’s frontman, Joaquin Muerte, is considered one of the smoothest vocalists carrying the torch for this unique, historic Chicano soul style. Besides his role in the Glowliners, Muerte is also a vocalist for Eddie & The Valiants, another band dedicated to preserving the West Side Sound. Additionally, Muerte indulges his love for cumbia and all things extraterrestrial with his other band, Combo Cosmico.
The premiere party for the “I Remember” music video promises to be puro San Anto, making it a must-attend event for fans and locals alike. The celebration will take place at the Slab Cinema Art House, a unique venue traditionally used to showcase local talent and arthouse films. Although Joaquin and the Glowliners will not perform at the event, the band members will make a personal appearance during an artist meet-and-greet, set against the backdrop of back-to-back vinyl DJ sets by renowned local DJs StreyUno Oldies, Bittyscorp, and Felipe Jr.
Directed by acclaimed local filmmaker Jacob Glombowski, the music video for “I Remember” tells a tale of heartache, longing, and soulful defiance, all encapsulated within a nostalgic, noir aesthetic. As a nod to San Antonio’s rich automotive heritage, classic cars from local enthusiasts’ group, Push Rods Car Clubs, will be parked outside the venue for fans and attendees to marvel at. Of course, no San Antonio event would be complete without good food and drink, which visitors can enjoy from various concessions at the venue.
This free event presents an opportunity for San Antonio’s local community to support and encourage home-grown talent. The event will kick off at 6 p.m., on Friday, June 28, at Slab Cinema Arthouse at Blue Star, 134 Blue Star. This soulful soirée will not only place Joaquin and the Glowliners on the local music map but simultaneously showcase the artistic heartbeat of San Antonio.
