The United Way of San Antonio has launched a remarkable initiative called Project Cool, aimed specifically at helping vulnerable populations cope with the oppressive heat. This year, the program has already distributed over 4,000 fans to those in need, ensuring they have a way to beat the heat.
The Role of 211 Call Center
The program operates through the 211 Call Center, which has been an essential resource for the community for over two decades. When residents call 211, they can get information about various services, including fan distribution. Funded by the United Way and the State of Texas, this helpline operates around-the-clock to provide assistance with utility bills, food support, and more.
How to Receive a Free Fan
Eligibility for receiving a free fan includes being at least 55 years old or having a disability. When individuals reach out to the 211 line, they’re asked to provide their ZIP code. The staff then connects them to the nearest location for fan collection, providing all necessary details like hours and required documents.
Making a Difference in the Community
According to the database manager and analyst at United Way, Jaqueline Gutierrez, “This program is key. It helps alleviate the heat for those populations that, most of the time, are on a fixed income and are not able to afford the high utility bills that come with heat waves.”
Last summer, the program distributed roughly 3,800 fans, but this year’s numbers already show a significant increase. With Project Cool running through the end of September, the nonprofit aims to continue providing relief to those affected by extreme temperatures.
