This expansion is part of a broader effort to enhance travel connections and make it easier for residents to visit family, conduct business, and enjoy vacations across the border.
New Routes, New Adventures
Travelers can look forward to flights operating three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The Morelia flight is scheduled to leave San Antonio at 6:49 p.m., arriving in Morelia at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, return flights from Morelia will take off at 9 a.m., landing back in San Antonio at 11:52 a.m.. This latest move brings the total number of nonstop destinations in Mexico from San Antonio International Airport to an impressive nine! That’s quite a leap from the four nonstop routes available before the pandemic. Existing routes also include Querétaro, Torreón, Cancun, Guadalajara, León, Mexico City, and Monterrey. The airport is not just a hub for traveling, but a gateway to the rich culture, scenery, and experiences that Mexico has to offer.
Growing Destinations
Morelia, the capital of Michoacán, is a beautiful city with a population of 849,053, having seen a growth of over 16% from 2010 to 2020. Known for its delectable figs, pineapples, avocados, guava, and mangoes, Morelia boasts exports totaling $273 million, making it a rich agricultural area. It’s not just a feast for the eyes, but also for the taste buds!
Similarly, San Luis Potosí isn’t to be overlooked. This vibrant city grew by 18% during the same period, bringing its population to 911,908. The economic landscape here is robust, with automotive parts making up $1.68 billion of the city’s nearly $8 billion in total exports as of 2023. This connection could prove essential for business and trade relations between San Antonio and San Luis Potosí.
Airport Expansion and Amenities
But that’s not all! The San Antonio International Airport itself is undergoing some exciting expansions. The airport hit a record breaking 11 million passengers in 2024, up nearly 4% from 2023, and it’s only going to get busier with the new flights! Plans are in place for a new $1.7 billion terminal expected to open in 2028. Travelers can anticipate improved facilities, including a new 38,000-square-foot Ground Load Facility, complete with seating, restaurants, shops, charging stations, workstations, and even a lactation room set to open this fall.
There’s also a Ground Transportation Center planned for 2027, which will provide about 2,000 parking spaces and will cost around $125 million. This upgrade will only enhance the traveler experience at the airport.
Connecting Communities
The new nonstop flights to Morelia and San Luis Potosí are seen as a boon for the community. Whether you’re planning a family reunion, embarking on a business trip, or heading to explore new tourist hotspots, these flights will certainly create significant opportunities. The airport’s director noted that these new routes will strengthen ties between the regions and encourage their growth.
Moreover, a sister city agreement has recently been signed between San Antonio’s Mayor and Querétaro’s Mayor to foster collaboration and shared opportunities between the cities.
So, whether it’s for a weekend getaway to enjoy Morelia’s stunning architecture or a business trip to the industrious San Luis Potosí, San Antonio is gearing up to offer more options than ever before! Pack your bags and prepare for an adventure heading south of the border!
