Hey, there, San Antonio! If you’ve been looking up at the sky lately, then you’re in for an exhilarating weekend of stargazing. This weekend, we’ll have the pleasure of witnessing one of the most beautiful meteor showers of the year – the Orionids! According to NASA, this spectacular event is not to be missed, especially after having such stunning visual treats in our Texas skies this year.
Just last weekend, we were able to catch a glimpse of a once-in-a-lifetime comet as it made its closest approach to Earth. I don’t know about you, but that was an absolute treat for any space enthusiast. If that wasn’t enough cosmic wonder, this weekend promises even more excitement as the Orionids come roaring in!
The Orionids are a breathtaking meteor shower that peaks in mid-October. What makes this meteor shower really special is the brightness and high speed of its meteors – they zoom through space at about 148,000 miles per hour! That speed results in dazzling trails of light in the night sky, creating the spectacular visual known as “trains”.
Mark your calendars! The Orionids meteor shower is expected to peak from Sunday to Monday, with the best time for viewing after midnight until just before dawn. For all the night owls out there, this is your time to shine! But before you head outside, consider this: the beauty of this celestial event can be hindered by light pollution and clouds, so it’s ideal to find a location with clear skies and minimal interference.
NASA expert, Bill Cooke, shares this handy tip: “Find an area well away from the city or street lights.” The great news? Texas boasts over 100 state and national parks, perfect for this occasion! If you’re up for a short trip, check out some of the state’s International Dark Sky Parks. Some fantastic options include Big Bend Ranch State Park, Enchanted Rock State Park, Copper Breaks State Park, and South Llano River State Park!
No fancy equipment is needed here! You can enjoy the gorgeous meteors with your own two eyes. But here’s a pro tip from Cooke: be sure to come prepared for comfort. Grab a sleeping bag, a blanket, or a lawn chair. Once you’re settled, lie flat on your back and gaze up at the sky—the more area you take in, the more meteors you’ll see! After about 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adjust, and you’ll start to catch those incredible flashes.
So, gather your friends and family, set your alarms, and prepare for a mesmerizing meteor shower this weekend! Whether you’re a seasoned stargazer or just curious about the wonders above, this night is perfect for everyone. Just remember to find a cozy, dark spot and soak in the cosmic beauty. Enjoy the Orionids, San Antonio!
