San Antonio is buzzing with news from the Parks and Recreation department! They are proposing a budget of over $117 million for the upcoming fiscal year, and the focus is on making our beloved parks even better. As the city continues to grow, so does the need for an expanded park system, and the department is on a mission to meet that demand.
“We know we have more people living in San Antonio and our park system continues to grow as well,” says Connie Swann, the marketing manager for the department. She emphasizes that it’s not only about creating more green spaces but also about providing engaging programs and learning opportunities for children. “It’s a holistic approach,” she adds, ensuring that every aspect of outdoor play and education is covered.
One of the exciting upgrades coming up includes installing canopies over playgrounds to help keep the equipment cool during those sizzling summer months. “We’re set to complete 13 playground shade structures at 12 different parks, and next year we’re going to continue that with an additional 12 playgrounds at 12 parks,” shares Swann. This initiative is a direct response to community feedback because let’s be honest—who wants to burn their skin on a scorching slide?
Skateboard enthusiasts will have something to cheer about too! Two new skate parks are currently under design, while others are scheduled to open later this year. Swann explains, “We have a skate park expansion at Rosedale Park on the west side that’s coming online pretty soon this fall.” This fall, the city will also unveil the Berkeley V and Vincent M Dawson Park on the east side, featuring both a beginner and an advanced skate park. Plus, there’s another skate park in the works for Southside Lions Park and Benavides Park.
If you’re a fan of sports, you’ll be thrilled to know that new sports courts are on the horizon. “We have a new basketball court coming to Jupe Manor Park,” Swann says. For those who have jumped on the pickleball craze, New Territories Park is set to add some courts, along with other locations around the city. These additions are all about making sports more accessible and fun for everyone.
It’s not just about the big upgrades—small enhancements matter too! Improvements such as better lighting, new trails, and even mountain biking options will be introduced. One noteworthy project includes a cyclocross course planned for Lady Bird Johnson Park, satisfying the needs of cycling fans all over the city.
Swann explains that the additions to each park are decided based on feedback from the community. “We really listen to the community and each community neighborhood is different,” she says. This approach means that whether you’re after pickleball courts or a skate park, they’re taking your voices into consideration to shape the park projects.
Local mom Julia Alanis shared her enthusiasm about the new amenities. “We look around to see what’s an option for the day or for the week,” she says, explaining how park amenities often dictate where she and her 8-year-old go for fun. More varied options can help families like hers explore new activities together.
Mark your calendars! The city council is scheduled to finalize and adopt the 2025 fiscal year budget next Thursday, September 19. With all these exciting plans in the pipeline, it looks like San Antonio’s parks and recreation scene is set for a big boost.
