A suspect, fleeing a traffic stop with a flat tire, crashed into another vehicle, leading to serious injuries. Alcohol may be a factor. Residents are cautioned to prepare for icy conditions as a winter weather advisory is in effect.
The winds are howling and the temperatures are tumbling in San Antonio as a winter weather advisory has been issued. Mark your calendars! This advisory is set to kick in at 6 p.m. on Friday and will last until 9 a.m. on Saturday. Residents should brace themselves for some slippery conditions with freezing rain and drizzle expected during this timeframe. Be safe out there!
The night took a dramatic turn around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday when a routine traffic stop escalated into a high-speed police chase. An officer from the Olmos Park Police tried to pull over a vehicle that was clearly having issues due to a flat tire. Instead of stopping, the driver made a run for it, igniting what would become a short but intense chase.
As if the night couldn’t get any scarier, the suspect eventually crashed head-on into another vehicle at the intersection of San Pedro Avenue and Fresno Street. The aftermath saw the suspect urgently needing medical attention, as they were taken to the hospital with serious head injuries. Thankfully, the driver of the other vehicle escaped with only minor injuries.
As investigators sort through the wreckage and the circumstances surrounding the crash, they suspect that alcohol may have played a part in this reckless act. It’s a stark reminder that safety should always be the priority, especially during this chilly season.
In response to the impending weather, Northside ISD has decided to err on the side of caution by cancelling or rescheduling after-school events. And that’s not all! To lend a helping hand during this cold snap, a dedicated overnight resilience hub will open for the homeless at the Northeast Senior Center, starting Friday at 5 p.m. and running until 10 a.m. on Saturday. These hubs will even accommodate your furry friends thanks to provisions set up by Animal Care Services.
As if the winter woes weren’t enough, residents should be aware that a significant arctic cold front is expected to push temperatures down starting Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. It might get really chilly, with wind chill values dropping into the single digits across parts of South and Central Texas, including Bexar, Guadalupe, Comal, Hays, Travis, and Williamson counties.
Just last week, the temperatures in San Antonio soared to a pleasant 71 degrees on Tuesday. But don’t let that fool you! A sudden drop to sub-freezing levels is projected overnight right after. Thursday and Friday look like they’ll be a struggle as well, with morning temperatures hovering near or below freezing.
Looking ahead to Saturday, there’s a slight chance of showers in the forecast, but we could see some relief with daytime temperatures reaching up to a balmy 50 degrees. Remember to bundle up, stay safe on the roads, and keep an eye on the weather updates. San Antonio, let’s weather this storm together!
