San Antonio – A police officer was dragged across a parking lot on the northwest side of San Antonio following a robbery at a local convenience store. The incident occurred on Monday night around 10 p.m., resulting in the officer sustaining minor injuries and the suspect being taken into custody, as confirmed by the San Antonio Police Department.
Two police officers had arrived at the QT convenience store near the 1000 block of Huebner Road responding to an emergency call. An employee quickly alerted them to a man who had just stolen beer and was attempting to flee the scene in a blue 2022 Ford Mustang.
One of the officers approached the parked vehicle and, as he opened the driver’s door, identified himself. However, the suspect began to drive away, causing the officer to be dragged across the parking lot before the vehicle came to a halt.
The suspect, a 41-year-old man, was swiftly arrested and faces multiple charges. These include aggravated assault on a peace officer, a first-degree felony, evading arrest with a vehicle, possessing a controlled substance, and theft of less than $2,500. The last charge, owing to the suspect’s previous record, has been elevated from a state jail felony to a Class A misdemeanor, underscoring the serious nature of the crimes committed.
Although the officer was dragged across the parking lot in what could have been a dangerous encounter, thankfully, he sustained only minor injuries. Commendably, he managed to hold on to the door during the incident, demonstrating the physical strength and mental fortitude often required by officers in the line of duty. It is reported that he is in stable condition and recovering from the incident.
San Antonio Police Department continues to investigate the incident. They will be examining the available evidence, including surveillance footage from the convenience store and testimonies from the officers and other eye-witnesses. The suspect is currently in custody pending further enquiry.
