Big Shakeup in San Antonio’s Radio Community as Beloved Hosts Depart

Big Changes in San Antonio’s Radio Scene

San Antonio is buzzing with news today as the local radio community faces a significant shakeup. It has been announced that two beloved radio personalities, Tony Cortez and Jenny Lee, have officially parted ways with Hits 105.3. This news has sent shockwaves through devoted listeners, who are no strangers to the familiar and friendly voices that have defined their mornings and commutes.

A Heartfelt Goodbye

On Wednesday evening, Hits 105.3 took to social media to share the heartfelt news of Cortez and Lee’s departure. The station described them as “wonderful people” who were a vital part of the team for a long time. “Our friends, Jenny & Tony are no longer on the air with us at Hits 105.3. They’ve been a vital and successful part of our team for a long time and we’re going to miss them,” the station posted. It was a clear acknowledgment of the impact both these talented hosts have had not just on the station, but on the broader community.

Meet the Radio Icons

Cortez, a San Antonio native, has over 20 years of experience in the radio industry. With a background that includes graduating from Texas State University and being raised in a military family, he has always held a special place in the hearts of his loyal listeners. On the other side, Lee began her illustrious career in San Antonio back in 2013 and quickly became a recognizable voice that many cherished.

Both personalities have been deeply involved in local nonprofits, using their platforms to give back and support the community. Their passion for San Antonio has made them not just radio hosts, but true local heroes.

A Tough Time for Radio

In a candid social media post, Lee expressed her feelings about the tough realities of working in radio. “The truth is, it’s just a tough time to be in radio. I was fortunate to make it through years of budget cuts, and I just wasn’t so lucky this time,” she wrote. Lee expressed pride in her journey, emphasizing that the departure was an emotional moment, marking the end of an era for her and her work family. “There’s no need to be upset on my behalf. No one was mean to me – it’s just business,” she added, highlighting the difficult circumstances facing many in the industry.

Listeners React

As expected, loyal listeners took to social media with their feelings of disbelief and sadness in the aftermath of this news. Many questioned the reasoning behind such a significant change in programming. One listener, Tess Marroquin, posted, “But WHY!!! What could possibly be the reasoning behind canceling such a loved and popular show?”

Another listener, Donna Albert, pointed out the noticeable trend of beloved DJs disappearing from the airwaves this year: “This is sad they have gotten rid of so many good DJs, not only from this station but also other Cox Media stations this year.”

Changing Times in Radio

Indeed, the radio landscape is changing rapidly. Just recently, another local station, Mix 96.1, underwent a programming revamp, showcasing the current trend of reshaping local radio formats. Their new programming targets a different audience by blending hit songs from the 80s and 90s with timeless Spanish songs, aiming to connect with diverse generations across the community.

The Future

While the news about Cortez and Lee is undoubtedly bittersweet, Hits 105.3 has promised that “fun plans” are coming soon for listeners, hinting at exciting changes ahead. For now, though, the departure of these two engaging hosts leaves a void in the local radio scene, and their loyal fans are left reminiscing about the memories created over the years.

As the San Antonio radio community braces itself for what’s next, one thing is for sure: Cortez and Lee have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many, and their voices will be missed. Here’s hoping that their next chapters are as bright as the joy they brought to the airwaves!
