San Antonio Faces Heavy Rainfall and Road Closures as Flooding Conditions Approach
Good news and bad news, folks! San Antonio is gearing up for some much-needed rainfall, but along with it comes the risk of flooding and unexpected road closures. Let’s break it down so you’re in the know before you head out!
Rain, Rain, Finally Stay
Bexar County and the city of San Antonio are about to get a taste of some significant moisture that we’ve been waiting for. Word is, we could see rainfall totals ranging from 1 to 3 inches in much of Bexar County, while areas to the east might experience even heavier downpours, totaling between 2 to 5 inches. Some spots south of San Antonio may end up with as much as 8 inches of rain, and in localized areas, we could witness amounts hitting up to an astounding 12 inches.
Traffic Woes Due to Construction
Just when you think your commute couldn’t get any trickier, parts of Loop 410 West are getting shut down starting Wednesday night thanks to the ongoing I-35 northeast expansion project. If you’re planning to drive westbound from the I-35 interchange to Perrin Beitel, you’ll need to find an alternate route. This closure is expected to last until 5 a.m. on Friday, so make sure to plan accordingly to dodge those traffic jams!
What to Expect with the Weather
Wednesday kicked off with some rain hitting the area, already dropping up to 2 inches in certain neighborhoods on the west side, leading to power outages that affected over 5,000 CPS Energy customers. As of midnight, about 1,000 customers were still experiencing outages. Be extra cautious, as these storms can pack a punch with some gusty winds and localized hail.
There’s a chance that we might catch a little break overnight, but be prepared for scattered showers during your Thursday morning commute. The intensity of rain is forecasted to ramp up significantly during Thursday afternoon and evening, with heavy rainfall stretching through Friday morning. A Flood Advisory is currently active for parts of Bexar and Medina County due to minor flooding risks, and Flood Watches remain effective for areas south of Interstate 10 and east of Interstate 35 until 7 a.m. Friday. Make sure to keep an eye on those flooded areas, especially those with clogged drains!
What About the Weather After the Storm?
After all this rain, we can expect the showers to taper off by Friday afternoon, although some lingering drizzles are still possible. If you’re hoping for some sunshine, Saturday will deliver! With calm winds and a high reaching up to 85 degrees, it’ll be a delightful break from the soggy conditions.
Sunday looks mostly sunny too! However, don’t let your guard down just yet, as there might be a chance of rain making its way back into the forecast by Monday evening.
Wrapping Up
So there you have it, San Antonio! Grab your umbrellas and stay safe out there. With road closures and the potential for flash flooding, it’s best to take the necessary precautions to ensure you and your loved ones stay dry and safe. Whether you’re hunkering down at home or braving the drive, here’s hoping you navigate this weather with ease!
