In a recent social media update, Julián Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, opened up about his experience being vetted as a potential vice presidential candidate back in 2016. This comes as speculation rises surrounding Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and her choice for a running mate in the upcoming election.
Castro recalled that in June 2016, he received a call from a top official in Hillary Clinton’s campaign asking if he would participate in the VP vetting process. He described the experience as quite rigorous, stating, “It’s a grind of a process.” Candidates had to fill out a 150+ question background questionnaire that covered various aspects of their political, employment, legal, financial, and personal family histories.
After completing the extensive questionnaire, Castro went through hours of interviews with a team comprised of lawyers and investigators. He mentioned, “They were direct and precise, mining for any potential political problem lurking in one’s background.” Following this initial round, a brief follow-up interview took place about a week later, leading to yet another interview with Clinton herself, alongside a handful of other candidates.
Castro emphasized that the selection of a vice presidential candidate often aims to create a balanced ticket, either by enhancing the strengths or compensating for the weaknesses of the main candidate. For instance, he cited historical examples, like John F. Kennedy choosing Lyndon Johnson to secure support from the South, and Barack Obama partnering with Joe Biden to bring legislative experience to his campaign.
Regarding his own potential as a candidate in 2016, Castro noted, “In 2016, the speculation was that Clinton might choose a Black or Latino male to balance the ticket.” As the current landscape shifts, it appears that this time around, a white male might take the spotlight, with notable figures like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly being mentioned as possibilities for Harris’s running mate.
In his reflection, Castro pointed out how political dynamics play a crucial role in the vetting process and selection of candidates. He analyzed how choices can make or break a campaign, saying, “Trump doubled down on his base with his VP picks, which may affect his competitiveness with independents.” With predictions swirling about Harris’s selection possibly being announced soon, Castro’s insights shed light on the complex considerations involved in such decisions.
