San Antonio River to Shine Emerald for St. Patrick’s Day Festivities

Get Ready for the Green River

Downtown San Antonio is all set to be bathed in a vibrant shade of green as the city gears up for its annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The iconic San Antonio River will transform into a shimmering emerald on March 16 and 17 as part of this cherished tradition.

The Green Transformation

The renowned River Walk will be dyed green in a spectacle known as ‘The Dyeing of the River Green’, sponsored by MadDogs. The dyeing event is scheduled for March 16 from 11 a.m. to noon along the Museum Reach section and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. along the downtown stretch of the river. The green transformation will continue on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., enhancing the festive spirit of the occasion.

The River Shannon Comes Alive

Since 1968, the San Antonio River has been playfully dubbed the “River Shannon” during these annual celebrations. The eco-friendly dye used for coloring the river is dispersed behind a barge that carries a bagpiper, adding to the magical ambience. A total of 25 gallons of dye will be used for each event, ensuring a vibrant green hue that captivates all onlookers.

St. Patrick’s Day Festivities

Following the river dyeing, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will kick into high gear with a myriad of activities. The Bud Light St. Patrick’s Festival, held at the Arneson River Theatre and La Villita from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., promises live entertainment and family-friendly fun on both March 16 and 17. The festival features performances by a variety of entertainers, including Fire on the Mountain, Brian Ralph, Da’ithi, St. James Gate, and more.

Family-Friendly Parades

Moreover, a St. Patrick’s Day river parade will grace the waterways on March 16, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. along the Museum Reach and from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. along downtown, providing a spectacle for all to enjoy. Both parades are free to attend, offering a perfect way to embrace the festive spirit along the enchanting River Walk.

Join the Celebration

With the picturesque San Antonio River decked out in green splendor, the city is all set to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style. Whether you’re looking to witness the dyeing of the river, enjoy live music at the festival, or partake in the delightful parades, the St. Patrick’s Day festivities promise an unforgettable experience for all.
