San Antonio River Maintenance Work Scheduled

News Summary

From January 13 to January 21, parts of the San Antonio River will undergo routine maintenance, involving drainage for cleaning. While a section will be fully drained, businesses nearby will operate normally, ensuring minimal disruption. The maintenance is essential for the river’s upkeep and ecosystem health. Fortunately, there will be no road closures during this period, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the River Walk and local attractions. This maintenance task highlights the collaborative efforts of city departments to keep the river vibrant and clean.

San Antonio River Gets a Refresh: Maintenance Work Scheduled

Hey there, San Antonio! As we kick off the new year, it’s time to talk about something important happening right in the heart of our beautiful city. From January 13 to January 21, parts of our beloved San Antonio River will be drained for some much-needed routine maintenance. So, let’s dive into the details about what this means for you, the river, and the businesses nearby.

What’s Happening?

During this maintenance period, a specific stretch of the river between Houston and Brooklyn Streets will be completely drained. Don’t worry, though—this is all part of a regular cleaning process that happens every two years, and it’s essential for keeping our river clean and vibrant for everyone to enjoy!

Now, while this particular section will be out of commission for a little while, areas north and south of the drained section will experience partial drainage. Luckily, the River Loop area is not part of the draining process, and those exciting boat tours and scenic views are expected to carry on as usual. Plus, the section near The Shops at Rivercenter and south of there will be business as usual—no disruptions there!

Business as Usual

For all you foodies and shopaholics, rest assured that the businesses along the River Walk shouldn’t feel any major impacts from the maintenance work. They will continue to serve you delicious meals and unique shopping experiences as always! It’s a win-win for everyone.

Progress Update

As of January 18, the draining operation was already completed ahead of schedule! Fantastic news for our city! This year, the cleaning focused on the main channel from East Josephine Street to East Nueva Street and from South Alamo Street to Lone Star Boulevard. Excitingly, a whopping 46.58 tons of sediment and debris were cleared out during this process. Just imagine all the items lurking under the water! Past drainings have uncovered everything from chairs to wallets, and even a few lost phones. It’s like treasure hunting right in the riverbed!

Why It Matters

The ongoing maintenance of the San Antonio River is crucial. This collaborative effort between the city’s Center City Development and Operations Department, the Public Works Department, and the San Antonio River Authority ensures that our river remains a clean and vibrant attraction for residents and visitors alike. Keeping the water clear also helps with the local ecosystem, providing a better habitat for fish and wildlife.

Road Closures? Not This Time!

One concern that often comes hand-in-hand with maintenance work is potential road closures. The good news is that there are currently no planned road closures related to this maintenance. So whether you’re planning to stroll along the river, enjoy a boat ride, or visit the nearby shops, you can do so without worrying about detours!

Mark Your Calendars!

Don’t forget that while the river is being drained for maintenance from January 12 through January 21, it’s all about keeping our river sparkling and fresh. So, feel free to plan your outings and enjoy everything San Antonio has to offer while our beloved waterway gets a little TLC.

Here’s to a fabulous new year and a sparkling clean San Antonio River! Enjoy your visits and take part in the ongoing journey to keep our city beautiful!
