Debates Ignite as Historic San Antonio School Faces Demolition

A heated debate has ignited surrounding the proposed demolition of a historic San Antonio school building, a structure that has borne witness to nearly a century of local history. St. Paul Lutheran School, which had served the community for over nine decades until its closure in January 2024, is now at the center of an escalating clash between the building’s owners and those advocating for historical preservation.

Condition and Closure of St. Paul Lutheran School

According to Brian Biediger, a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the school was forced to cease operations due to the deteriorating condition of the building. “We had to close out in January when the engineers came in,” Biediger reported. “They told us this isn’t safe. It’s at risk of collapse, and that’s why we had to get out of the building and take everything out. We’ve got the risk of collapse. We’ve got the asbestos. We’ve got the mold.” The school building, situated at 201 Roseborough Street, was erected in 1928 and first opened its doors in 1929.

The school has played a significant role in the community’s social fabric for decades. In addition to its educational function, the school was also the base of operations for the local Meals on Wheels service. “I grew up here. Sunday school here in this building. My mom was baptized in this building in the church with me. That was in the late 1940s,” Biediger fondly recalled.

The Preservation Debate

Despite the school’s currently dilapidated state, The Conservation Society of San Antonio advocates for the building’s preservation. For progress to be made toward preservation, however, broad community support is essential. The Conservation Society has been leveraging social media platforms to encourage community members interested in protecting the building to contact the Office of Historic Preservation, which has the power to intervene and prevent the planned demolition.

Despite the Conservation Society’s efforts, there’s no existing timeline regarding when, if at all, demolition will be performed. However, the church intends to repurpose the site, according to Pastor Dave Murillo, head pastor of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. “Our plan is not/has never been to sell the land but instead to continue to serve our community with a new church-owned and operated building that would house our thrift store ministry,” Pastor Murillo explained.

Financing the Future

The financial implications of the conflict cannot be understated. According to Biediger, rehabilitating the old building for safe reuse could cost millions, whereas razing the structure and erecting a new, multifunctional building would be a more cost-effective approach.

The fate of the building, as it stands, is suspended in uncertainty as all eyes turn toward the crucial August 30th deadline to see whether the Conservation Society can secure enough community backing to halt or delay the demolition.

The future of this historic San Antonio building serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between progress and preservation in the ever-changing urban landscapes of our communities.
