San Antonio – In a heartwarming surprise, teachers from both East Central Independent School District (ISD) and Harlandale Independent School District received an impressive $40,000 worth of school supplies on Tuesday. This generous donation was made possible by the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County as part of their annual Write Start Project.
The delivery of these school supplies was not only a gift but an event to remember. United Way volunteers, along with cheerleaders and band members from East Central High School, rallied together to hand out the supplies in person during a press conference held at Honor Elementary School.
The press release stated that the supplies were aimed at easing the financial burdens educators often face as they prepare for the school year. The teachers at Honor Elementary received not just the school supplies, but also a boost through a federal grant known as Project AWARE, which aims to enhance mental and behavioral health services for students over the next five years.
At the press conference, several speakers highlighted the importance of this initiative. Among them was Chris Martin, the CEO and President of United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County; Roland Toscano, Superintendent of East Central ISD; and Jessica Weaver, CEO of Communities In Schools of San Antonio. Their messages emphasized how such support impacts both educators and students positively.
As the school year kicks off, with East Central ISD’s first day of class set for Wednesday, the supplies and support from United Way serve as a reminder of the community’s commitment to education. This initiative reflects the collaborative spirit that is vital for fostering a nurturing and productive learning environment.
