News Summary

The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) has decided to keep schools closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, due to ongoing concerns over cold weather and safety. With approximately 45,000 students in its care, the district aims to protect students from harsh conditions, especially those who walk or wait for buses early in the morning. While school closures may raise concerns, SAISD is providing curbside meals and plans to reopen on January 23. Ongoing issues with heating systems in schools have also prompted discussions about safety and infrastructure improvements.

San Antonio Schools Closed Again for Safety

San Antonio is feeling the chill! The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) made the tough call to keep schools closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, due to concerns about cold weather lingering in the area. This announcement was communicated to parents in a notification received by local media.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, January 21, various school districts across the region decided to close down due to the icy conditions and frigid temperatures. However, SAISD stands out as the only district in San Antonio and Bexar County to extend these closures into Wednesday. The announcement regarding the closure was released just before 5:30 PM on Tuesday evening, prioritizing the safety of students.

Safety First!

With approximately 45,000 students in its care, SAISD expressed concerns particularly for those students who might have to walk or wait at bus stops in the bone-chilling early morning air. Student safety remains a top priority as temperatures are expected to dip below freezing until at least Friday, January 24.

What About Meals?

Even with schools closed, SAISD is still looking out for its students. Curbside meals will be offered at select schools between 10 AM and noon on Wednesday, ensuring that no student goes hungry during the cold snap.

Plan to Reopen

The district is planning for a big reopening on Thursday, January 23. As families make plans to stay cozy at home, they can feel assured that the schools are making arrangements to be ready for a warm welcome back.

Heating Concerns Resurface

Some students have even expressed discomfort due to the cold, mentioning the need to bundle up in a hoodie and jacket just to stay warm. Parents have been understandably worried about their children’s comfort, especially after a detailed 38-page report surfaced, addressing systemic failures in the school district’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) infrastructure.

What Is SAISD Doing?

SAISD officials have not directly acknowledged that the irregular functioning of heating systems is linked to the current closure. However, during a recent board meeting, the Deputy Superintendent noted that the readiness of HVAC systems plays a crucial role in ensuring school safety during extreme weather conditions. While there have been efforts to improve the district’s infrastructure, many of the buildings are over a century old and weren’t originally designed to handle modern heating and cooling needs.

Facing the unique challenges of older facilities compared to newer districts, the superintendent highlighted the need for continuous investment to ensure the safety and comfort of all students, especially during these cold snaps.

Final Thoughts

As the city shivers through this chilly weather, it’s a good time for families to stay informed about school updates. Remember, safety comes first, and SAISD’s decision to keep schools closed is all about taking care of our students in the best way possible. Stay warm, San Antonio!
